MultiChat — Split View for WhatsApp Web
Overview
See and reply to up to four WhatsApp Web conversations at once in a resizable grid. Everything stays local to your browser.
MultiChat turns WhatsApp Web's single conversation panel into a grid of up to four, so you can follow several threads without clicking back and forth. WHAT IT DOES • Up to four conversations side by side, in a 2×2, three-column or three-row layout • Every pane stays current as messages arrive — not just the one WhatsApp has open • Reply from any pane; press Enter to send, Shift+Enter for a new line • Each chat gets its own colour, so you can tell panes apart at a glance • Unread counts on any pane you have scrolled away from • Drag a pane's header onto another to swap their positions • Expand a single pane to full width when a conversation needs your attention • Search your chat list instead of scrolling it • Follows WhatsApp Web's light or dark theme automatically HOW TO USE IT 1. Open web.whatsapp.com and sign in as usual 2. Click the MultiChat icon, then Start 3. Click any chat in WhatsApp's sidebar to add it to the grid 4. Click a pane and type Alt+Shift+M toggles the grid. Alt+1 to Alt+4 jump to a pane's message box. HOW IT WORKS, HONESTLY WhatsApp Web only renders one conversation at a time. MultiChat reads the sidebar — which updates for every chat — and when a tracked chat changes it briefly reopens that conversation to collect the new messages. This has one consequence worth knowing before you install: chats in your grid get marked as read, exactly as if you had clicked them yourself. There is no way around this short of talking to WhatsApp's servers directly, which this extension deliberately does not do. PRIVACY • Everything happens locally, inside your browser tab • No servers, no analytics, no tracking, no accounts • No message content is ever transmitted or stored — only the names of the chats you put in the grid, saved in Chrome's local storage so your layout survives a refresh • One permission (storage) and one site (web.whatsapp.com). Nothing else • The source is public: https://github.com/thegreatLUCY/multichat-whatsapp-extension NOT AFFILIATED WITH WHATSAPP MultiChat is an independent, open-source project.
