Multi-Tab Search
Overview
Multi-Tab Search opens your search term across multiple sites with one click.
Multi Tab Search opens the same search term across multiple sites in one go. You create “groups” of sites, then run a single search to open all of those sites together in your preferred window and tab layout. What you do: 1. Choose a group in the popup and type your search term. 2. Click Search. 3. The extension opens tabs for each site in that group, either in your current window or in a dedicated results window. 4. If you use tab groups in the browser, the tabs can be automatically grouped and colour coded. What the extension does behind the scenes: • Builds site URLs using your search term. Each site has a template like https://example.com/?q=%s and the extension replaces %s with your search term. • Sanitises your term so awkward characters are handled before the URLs are opened. • Opens tabs using your chosen rules: o Open in current window or open in a dedicated results window. o Keep using the same search window so multiple searches appear in one place. o If you reuse that window, you can add new results after existing tabs or replace the previous search tabs. o Choose where new tabs appear: first, before active, after active, or last. • Tab groups (optional): put the results into a browser tab group and set either a default colour or to cycle through the available colours. You can also create a new group for each search or reuse the same one. • Context menu: highlight text on a page, right click, then run a whole group or a single site from the menu. • History: keeps a small list of your recent search terms so you can quickly repeat them from the popup. Editing your groups: • Create as many groups as you need. • Add sites by pasting a URL template that contains %s where the search term should go. • Use the "Use +" option to replace spaces with plus signs. • Export and import groups, or export and import all settings for quick backup and restore. Options that matter: • Keep using the same search window: reuse one dedicated results window instead of creating a new one every time. • Add new results to that window (instead of replacing the old ones): appears only when you reuse the results window. • Tab insert position and When overwriting: close extra tabs are automatically disabled in situations where they do not apply, so what you see always matches what will happen. • Group result tabs and Create a separate tab group for each search control whether tabs are grouped and how groups are reused. • Focus the first result tab decides whether to switch focus to results or let you stay on the current page. • Diagnostics: enable verbose logs for troubleshooting, then turn them off for normal use. Privacy and permissions: • Uses standard browser APIs for tabs, tab groups, storage, and context menus. • Saves your groups and settings locally with sync so they travel with your signed in browser profile. • Does not read the content of the sites you open. You control which sites are in your groups. Getting started: 1. Install the extension and open Options. 2. Add a group and a few sites. Put %s where the search term should go. 3. In the popup, select your group, type a term, then click Search. Or highlight your search term in the browser and select the group in the context menu. 4. Adjust options until the window and grouping behaviour suits your workflow. Tips: • Use the context menu when you want to search highlighted text without opening the popup. • Enable Keep using the same search window to keep your main work window uncluttered. • Set Create a separate tab group for each search to keep topics separate during research sessions. • Export your groups to share a starter set with colleagues or students.
