Overview

Turn chosen websites grayscale. Per-site, per-tab, or everywhere. No tracking, no network requests.

Colour is what makes an infinite feed hard to put down. Monochrome Sites removes it from the handful of sites that pull you in, and leaves everything else exactly as it was. WHAT IT DOES • Saved sites — always grayscale, from the very first painted frame • One-click preset — add 20 well-known social networks and feeds at once • Excluded sites — never grayscale, even in all-sites mode • This tab — a temporary toggle that lasts until you close the tab • All sites — grayscale everything except your exclusions • Flat backgrounds — optionally strip background colours and images, which a grayscale filter cannot desaturate on its own • Import / export — your settings as a plain JSON file • Keyboard shortcuts — open the popup or toggle the current tab without reaching for the mouse NO FLASH OF COLOUR Most extensions of this kind apply their filter from a script after the page starts loading, so you see a frame or two of full colour first. This one registers its stylesheet with the browser ahead of time, applied before the page's DOM is even constructed. A saved site is grayscale on its first painted frame — on a cold start, on a slow connection, every time. RULES THAT BEHAVE PREDICTABLY Saved sites win over exclusions, always. An entry covers the domain and all of its subdomains, so adding example.com also covers m.example.com — and adding news.ycombinator.com affects only that subdomain. Paste a full URL if you like; it is normalised for you. PRIVACY No analytics. No telemetry. No network requests of any kind — the extension has no server. It never reads page content, never injects JavaScript into pages, and contains no remote code. Your site lists are stored with the browser's own sync storage and never leave your browser.
