Gloss

Interactive translated subtitles and contextual AI chat over ordinary HTML video.

Gloss does not simply add subtitles to a video and translate them. It operates within the context of a specific video, taking into account adjacent lines, finding and highlighting grammatical structures, fixed expressions, phrasal verbs, wordplay, cultural references, and more. Key features of Gloss: — Support for subtitles on YouTube, searching for subtitles by title, and uploading your own subtitle files. — Subtitle translation and structure recognition for the entire video at once or only for specific lines. — An AI chat that sees the current and adjacent lines — you can ask questions about the video using text and voice, and attach video frames ("What is written on this sign?"). — A preview of the previous line — in case the conversation is too fast. — Saving words and structures to a "Dictionary" with convenient export as text, a table, or a file. Gloss is a free extension that I made for myself, and it works in conjunction with external APIs. Built-in video subtitles and uploading your own files work right out of the box. If you also want to search for subtitles by title, you can simply connect an API key from supported subtitle databases in the settings. To translate subtitles and use the chat via AI, you will need to provide your own OpenAI API key. In Gloss, you can reduce token consumption by half by increasing the response delay from the AI — helping you make steady progress in learning a foreign language.
