Mercury is a peer-to-peer encrypted messenger built on the CloakNet protocol. It connects you directly to your contacts over WebRTC — your messages travel straight to the other person's device, encrypted end-to-end, and are never stored on our servers. How it works — Create a handle and an Ed25519 identity key, generated and stored only on your device. — Add a contact by handle; a lightweight signaling relay introduces your devices to each other, then gets out of the way. — Every message is sealed with a fresh session key (X25519 key agreement, AES-256-GCM) before it ever leaves your browser. Why Mercury — No accounts beyond a self-chosen handle — no email, no phone number required. — Your conversation history lives in your browser, not in the cloud. — The relay server only ever sees encrypted bytes and the connection metadata needed to route them — never your message content. — Your identity is protected by a PIN before it ever touches disk, and you control if and when to export an encrypted backup. Current status Mercury is in public beta. Voice calling is visible in the interface but intentionally disabled while it goes through further testing. We're actively hardening the signaling infrastructure and welcome feedback.
