Overview

Control media across Chrome with global shortcuts for volume, seek, speed, gain, and smart pause or resume.

Media Control Shortcuts gives you one consistent set of controls for audio and video across Chrome. Pause media, resume the last active player, seek, change playback speed, adjust native volume, or add extra audio gain without returning to the tab that started playback. HOW IT WORKS Chrome manages the keyboard assignments, so shortcuts can work browser-wide when their scope is set to Global. Open the extension popup to see Chrome's current assignments in real time, then use the included link to change them on Chrome's Keyboard Shortcuts page. Commands shown as Not set remain available and can be assigned at any time. When you press a shortcut, the extension identifies the relevant media tab and exact embedded frame. It prioritizes the real playing or recently active media, applies the command once, and verifies the result. The active page does not need to be the page containing the player. MAIN FEATURES - Pause all playing media, then resume the last active media target with the same command. - Seek forward or backward by five seconds. - Increase, decrease, or reset playback speed. - Continue to extended playback rates up to 16x on supported players. - Increase or decrease the player's native volume in 5% steps. - Change volume with the mouse wheel while the pointer is over a video. - Increase audio gain beyond the player's normal volume range and reset it to 1.0. - Control media inside supported embedded frames and open shadow-root players. - Exclude any hostname from media shortcut handling in the popup. - See a short on-player confirmation for volume, speed, gain, and other actions. DEFAULT SHORTCUT SUGGESTIONS Video All Pause / Resume Last — Alt+Shift+S Video Forward 5 Seconds — Alt+D Video Backward 5 Seconds — Alt+A Playback Speed Increase — Ctrl+Shift+D Playback Speed Decrease — Ctrl+Shift+A Playback Speed Reset — Ctrl+Shift+S Volume Gain Increase — Alt+Shift+Up Volume Gain Reset — Alt+Shift+Down Volume Increase — Alt+Shift+Right Volume Decrease — Alt+Shift+Left Chrome limits how many commands an extension can assign automatically. If a shortcut is shown as Not set, open the popup, choose Open Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts, assign the keys you prefer, and optionally change the command scope from In Chrome to Global. NATIVE VOLUME AND AUDIO GAIN Normal volume commands change the player-owned or HTML media volume state, so native player controls can stay synchronized. Audio gain is a separate boost feature for levels beyond the normal 100% range; because it operates after the player volume, it does not move the player's native 0–100% slider. PRIVACY The extension has no account, ads, analytics, telemetry, or remote code. Tab URLs and media state are processed locally only to route the command and honor excluded sites. Preferences stay in Chrome's local extension storage and are never transmitted to the developer or a third party. SITE-SPECIFIC REFINEMENTS - YouTube : native volume and mute synchronization, persistent extension-selected volume, native speed-menu synchronization within supported rates, extended speeds above the native maximum, and protection against suggested-video hover previews stealing commands. - Netflix: native forward/backward seeking and playback-speed updates, including synchronization with the speed selector without pausing playback around the change. - X: the mouse wheel changes volume only when the pointer is over the video; scrolling elsewhere continues to move the feed. - Facebook : wheel volume follows the visible Reel and the last extension-selected level is reused for newly mounted Reels and reloads. - Coursera: playback speed can continue beyond the platform's native 2x option, while reset returns to the native 1x path. For other websites, Media Control Shortcuts uses a feature-detected HTML5 media fallback.
