Marker — Highlight & Notes
Overview
Highlight text on any page, add notes, and find everything again in a searchable side panel. Works offline.
Marker turns any web page into something you can mark up like a printed article. Select text, pick one of five colours, and it stays there — after a reload, after the site re-renders, after you come back a week later. Add a note to remember why a passage mattered. Then find all of it again in a side panel that searches across every page you have ever highlighted. WHAT IT DOES • Five highlight colours, from a small toolbar that appears next to your selection • Notes on any highlight, shown on hover and searchable later • A side panel listing your highlights for the current page or all pages at once • Full-text search across highlights and notes, plus filtering by colour • Click a highlight in the panel to scroll straight to it on the page • Export to Markdown, plain text, or a JSON backup you can import again • Turn Marker off completely for specific sites • Keyboard shortcuts for highlighting and for opening the panel • English and German interface, following your browser language HIGHLIGHTS THAT ACTUALLY COME BACK Most highlighters remember a position in the page structure, which breaks the moment a site changes its layout. Marker remembers the words instead: the highlighted text plus a little of the text around it. When you return, it looks for that passage again — so highlights survive layout changes, injected ads, cookie banners and single-page navigation. If the wording itself was edited, it falls back to the longest part of the quote that is still there. PRIVACY Marker has no account, no server and no analytics. It makes no network requests at all. Your highlights are stored in your own browser using Chrome's local extension storage and never leave your device. There is no third-party code in the extension. Everything works offline. The extension needs access to the pages you visit for one reason only: text highlighting happens on the page you are reading, and it cannot know in advance which page that will be. It does not read pages in the background — it acts on text you select and on highlights you have already saved. Open source under the MIT licence.
