Overview

Sends what you select on a web page to your Markdown notes on disk: the default note or one you pick. Edit them in the side panel.

Markdown Knowledge Base keeps your notes as plain .md files in a folder on your own disk — and gives you a quick way to add what you read on the web to them. Select text on any page, click the toolbar button (or press Alt+Shift+M) and press Send to Markdown: the selection is added to the end of your default note as clean Markdown, with a link back to the page it came from. Or pick any other note from the list, or turn the whole article into a note of its own. CLIP FROM THE WEB • Send a selection to the default note (Inbox.md to begin with) or to any note you pick. Find a note by name; star the one you want as the default. • Nothing selected? Take the page's main text — the article itself, without menus, sidebars, footers, share buttons and forms — and save it as a new note with its title, source address and date in front matter. • Right-click to send the page, the selection, a link or an image to Markdown without leaving the page. • Every clip ends with a line linking to its source. CLEAN MARKDOWN Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, highlight, inline code, links and images with full addresses, nested, numbered and task lists, quotes, code blocks with their language, tables and dividers. No HTML from the page gets into your note, and characters such as * or # typed on the page are escaped so they never turn into formatting. Lazy-loaded images get their real address; tracking pixels are left out. A FULL EDITOR IN THE SIDE PANEL Your knowledge base opens beside the page you are reading, in Chrome's side panel, and stays there as you switch tabs. • File tree with folders; create, rename and delete notes. • Read and edit modes, a formatting toolbar and keyboard shortcuts. • Tables, clickable task checkboxes, ==highlight==, [[wiki links]], front matter, syntax highlighting for 19 languages. • Images from the folder, including Obsidian-style ![[...]] embeds. Paste or drop an image and it is saved beside the note. • Nested tags, kept in a .meta.json file next to your notes. • Export a folder as a static HTML site with search, or as a single page. • Autosave, undo and redo, search in a note, light and dark themes. • Interface in 17 languages, including Arabic and Urdu right to left. Works with any folder of Markdown files, such as an existing Obsidian vault. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Your notes never leave your computer. Files are read and written in place through Chrome's File System Access API. No account, no cloud, no sync, no analytics. • The extension makes no network requests at all: its pages are locked down with connect-src 'none'. • It reads a page only when you click its button, choose its menu item or press its shortcut (activeTab). It has no access to any site otherwise and runs no content scripts. • Scripts inside notes never run. • Open source under the MIT license. GETTING STARTED 1. Click the toolbar button, choose Full mode and open a folder for your notes. An empty folder works too. 2. When Chrome asks, choose "Allow on every visit", so the folder stays available after the panel closes or Chrome restarts. 3. On any page, select some text, press Alt+Shift+M, then Send to Markdown. If Chrome has closed access to the folder, nothing is lost: what you send waits in the extension and is added to the note as soon as you open the folder again. Note: images stay linked from the web rather than being downloaded into the folder, since that would require access to every site. Requires Chrome 116 or later; also works in Microsoft Edge.
