Marginalize is an ad blocker with a specific obsession: the *marginal* ad real estate that hurts browsing the most — sidebar boxes, sticky banners, full-page overlays, fake "close" buttons that open new tabs, anti-adblock walls, notification-spam prompts, and the click-hijack popunders that streaming and download sites pile on. The name is a pun. We marginalize the ads. ▸ FIRST-PARTY ADS ARE LEFT ALONE — Marginalize does NOT block ads served by the website itself. If a publisher hosts their own ad slot on their own domain, it loads normally. Only requests to third-party ad and tracker networks (domains different from the page you're on) are blocked. Small independent publishers monetizing with their own ad system keep their revenue; the broker-of-brokers ad-tech web that follows you around the internet does not. What else makes Marginalize different from a stock blocker: ▸ POPUNDER DEFENSE — Most ad blockers stop the network request and call it a day. Marginalize also patches window.open in the page's own JavaScript world at document_start, so when a sketchy site's onclick handler tries to spawn a new tab anywhere you click, the call is intercepted and silently swallowed. You click, nothing pops, the legitimate click still works. ▸ FAKE-X CLOSE BUTTON FIX — Some ad overlays wrap their close button in an ad link. You click the × to dismiss the popup, but instead it opens the ad. Marginalize detects close-looking elements inside ad-shaped containers and rewrites the behavior: the click actually closes the container instead of launching the ad. ▸ CLICK-HIJACK NEUTRALIZER — Detects invisible full-viewport <a target="_blank"> overlays (the ones that absorb every click on a sketchy streaming page) and disables them so the underlying content becomes clickable again. ▸ NOTIFICATION-SPAM & PUSH-AD GUARD — Auto-denies the programmatic "Allow notifications?" prompt that fake-CAPTCHA and scam pages fire the instant you click anything, and blocks the push-ad service workers and subscriptions that keep spamming you after the tab is closed — unless the request follows a genuine click you actually made. ▸ ADAPTIVE ANTI-HINDRANCE BLOCKER — Learns and removes the barriers that hold content hostage: anti-adblock walls ("disable your ad blocker to continue"), full-page interstitials, and scroll-locks that freeze the page behind an overlay. It remembers what it removed per-site so repeat visits are clean, and only acts when a barrier phrase is actually present. Every removal is reversible (an Undo / "Always show here" prompt), it never touches logins, checkout, or consent dialogs, and you can review, reset, or switch it off entirely in Settings. Conservative by design. ▸ COOKIE-CONSENT AUTO-DISMISS — Automatically clicks "Reject all" (your choice, reject by default) on the major cookie-consent management platforms, so you stop clicking cookie banners. ▸ YOUTUBE — Auto-skips pre-roll and mid-roll video ads directly in the player, and optionally skips creator-read "this video is sponsored by…" segments using the community SponsorBlock database. ▸ TWITCH — Detects Twitch ads and mutes + covers the player until the real stream returns, so you never see or hear the ad. An experimental option can strip stitched ad segments out of the live HLS stream entirely (off by default — turn it on in Settings → Twitch). ▸ UNRELATED-OUTBOUND BLOCKER — When you click a link that goes to a completely different domain and the URL looks like a redirect or affiliate tracker (/click?, ?utm_source=, /redirect/, /go/, known popunder networks), the click is cancelled. A built-in allowlist of trusted destinations is never blocked. ▸ POSITION-BASED COSMETIC HIDING — Hand-tuned CSS that targets sidebar, banner, sponsored-content, sticky-promo, and player-overlay containers by name and position, on top of full EasyList cosmetic rules. ▸ NETWORK BLOCKING — Bundled blocking rules for the worst ad/tracker/popunder networks, auto-refreshed daily with EasyList and EasyPrivacy. Up to ~29,000 additional dynamic rules from the upstream lists. ▸ ELEMENT PICKER — Click any element on a page to hide it permanently, with one-click Undo if you misclick. ▸ LIVE PER-PAGE COUNTER — An optional pill in the bottom-right corner of every page shows how many requests Marginalize blocked there. Resets on every navigation so the number always reflects the current page. ▸ PER-SITE PAUSE & SHORTCUTS — One toggle in the popup turns Marginalize off for the current site (or pause it for 10 minutes with automatic resume). Keyboard shortcuts open the popup (Alt+Shift+M) and toggle protection on/off (Alt+Shift+P). What Marginalize is NOT: • Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or derived from any other ad blocker, browser, or company. • Not a "lite" Manifest V2 holdout. Built native for Manifest V3, with all the architecture trade-offs that implies. • Not selling your data. Not sending telemetry. Not running analytics. Everything Marginalize decides happens locally in your browser, and you are never assigned an identifier. The only network requests it makes are (1) the scheduled filter-list fetches to the public URLs you control, and (2) — only if you turn on SponsorBlock for YouTube — a lookup of community sponsor-segment data by video ID (no account, cookies, or history). Nothing else leaves your device. Read the privacy policy. Permissions: Marginalize requests broad host access (<all_urls>) because the content scripts must run on every site you visit to apply cosmetic hiding, the popunder/notification defenses, and the adaptive anti-hindrance blocker. It also requests declarativeNetRequest for ad blocking, storage for your settings, per-site preferences, and locally-learned rules, alarms for the daily filter refresh, tabs and webNavigation for the per-tab counter, and declarativeNetRequestFeedback for the badge count.
