Overview

Export the Google Maps route on your tab as a GPX track. Pick an alternative, download it, open it in Garmin, Komoot or OsmAnd.

Google Maps keeps your route on the map. It never gives you the track as a file, so you cannot load it into a watch, a bike computer or a hiking app. This extension takes the route already drawn on your Google Maps tab and turns it into a GPX file. How to use it 1. Plan a route in Google Maps — driving, walking or cycling. 2. Click the Map to GPS icon in the toolbar. 3. Choose one of the route options Google Maps is showing. 4. Download the file and open it in Garmin Connect, Komoot, OsmAnd, Strava or anything else that reads GPX. The file holds the geometry Google Maps drew, point by point. A San Francisco to Oakland drive comes out as about 1,400 points. The track is named after your start and end points. There is no timestamp, no elevation and no invented waypoint: if Google did not draw it, it is not in the file. Two things it refuses to do. A transit route is not a track, so the popup says so instead of guessing. And it never plans a route of its own: the line in the file is the line on your screen. If Google changes the format of the data it sends, you get a message and a "Rebuild with OpenStreetMap" option that warns you the new geometry will differ from what Google drew. The route stays in your browser. No account, no analytics, no server of ours in between: the extension reads a response your own Google Maps tab already received, and keeps the last one in session storage until the browser closes. The only outbound request is to the OpenStreetMap routing service, and only if you press that rebuild button. More tools from maptogps.com: a GPX viewer, a KML converter and a GPX guide.
