Overview

Shows the live tempo of the music playing in the current tab. Audio is analysed on your device and never leaves it.

See the tempo of whatever is playing, right on the player. Click the toolbar button on a tab that is playing music. The BPM appears on top of the page and updates live. Click again, or close the overlay, to stop. WHAT IT DOES • Shows the live BPM with a stability hint, so you can tell a settled tempo from one still being worked out. Stable means the reading has settled, not that it is certainly right. • Sits in the player or the play bar on supported sites, and is a small pill you can drag anywhere else • Shows the tempo on the toolbar button too • Notes the playback speed: at x1.25 you see the tempo you hear, and the track's original tempo beside it • Works from the keyboard, and respects reduced motion WHERE IT WORKS It usually places itself in the player on YouTube, YouTube Music and Twitch, and in the play bar on SoundCloud, Bandcamp and Mixcloud. Elsewhere it is usually a floating pill. This extension is independent, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these services. Some sites protect their audio. Before it has a tempo, if no sound reaches it, the overlay says "no audio". Once it has one, that number stays on screen through a pause or silence, and a stable one stays marked stable. WHAT IT CAN'T DO • It looks for tempos from 90 to about 178 BPM. Faster music reads at half and slower music at double: 200 shows as 100, 70 as 140. • It restarts when the page shows that the track changed. On a continuous mix, one-stream radio or a player that shows no track change, it has only the audio to go on, so the old tempo can stay on screen, still marked stable, for about 20 seconds after the music changes. The new tempo can take longer again to settle, and may be wrong at first. PRIVACY Your audio never leaves your device. The extension listens to a tab only after you click, and works out the tempo on your computer. It keeps listening to that tab as you move around the same site, until you click again, close the overlay or close the tab. If the tab goes to another site, listening stops once that page has loaded. It records no audio and makes no network request of its own. To notice a new track it reads what the page says is playing, on your device, and sends none of it anywhere. While listening, it keeps only its capture state and the id of the tab it is listening to, plus, in memory until listening stops, what it needs to recognise a track. All of that goes when the capture stops or the browser closes. The one thing it keeps longer is your choice on its settings page (the widget’s progress style), in the browser’s local storage on your device until you remove the extension. It is never sent. Chrome's install prompt says "Read and change all your data on all websites" because that is its warning for tab capture. The extension only acts on the tab you click. The extension opens a page of realtime-bpm-analyzer.com when you install it, after a feature update, and when you remove it. Those pages are part of the website, which uses Google Analytics. The only thing the extension passes them is its version number, and the previous version after an update, in the address. Privacy policy: https://www.realtime-bpm-analyzer.com/extension/privacy
