Overview
Click subtitle words on Netflix, YouTube, Prime, Max, Disney+ for context-aware translation, then drill them with SRS flashcards.
LinguaLens turns the streaming you already do into language practice. Every subtitle on Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Max (HBO), and Disney+ becomes interactive: click a word you don't know, get a contextual translation in your native language, save it, and come back to review with mini-games — not boring flashcards. ━━━ How it works ━━━ While watching: • Dual subtitles (target + native language) side by side. • Click any word — popup shows its translation, the meaning in this scene (not just the dictionary's first guess), pronunciation, and optional Anthropic Claude AI commentary on slang, sarcasm, or cultural references. • Hyphenated words and contractions ("brother-in-law", "I'll") are handled correctly. Shift-click selects multi-word phrases ("look forward to"). • Pause on hover, auto-pause at sentence end, hide-translation-until-hover for active recall. While reviewing: • 7 review modes, all auto-game-ified — no boring 4-button flashcard: ◦ Due review (SuperMemo-2 spaced repetition) ◦ Stuck on (leech detection) ◦ Quiz (multi-choice fill-in-the-blank) ◦ Match (6-pair pairing game) ◦ Type (typing recall) ◦ Listen (TTS-first quiz) ◦ Reverse (recall the source word from the translation) • Daily streak counter, 30-day activity heatmap, editable daily goal. • Sound + speech feedback: chime on correct, soft buzz on wrong, every word read aloud after pick. ━━━ What makes it different ━━━ • 5 streaming platforms supported out of the box — most extensions cover 1 or 2. • Multi-source dictionary: Google Translate baseline + 270+ idiom dictionary + Urban Dictionary slang fallback + optional Anthropic Claude contextual reading. • Contextual sense matching: "toast" in a wedding scene becomes "raise a glass", not "bread". • Behavior-based subtitle detection: works even on platforms (Disney+, HBO Max) that ship subtitles through obscure rendering paths instead of standard <track> elements. • Subtitle delay slider (±2 seconds) for platforms that occasionally ship out-of-sync captions. • Anki TSV export for power users. • 7 UI languages out of the box (English, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese), auto-detected from your browser. ━━━ Privacy ━━━ LinguaLens has no servers of its own. All saved words and settings stay in your browser via chrome.storage. Translation requests go directly to Google Translate and (optionally) Anthropic — only the word you click + the surrounding sentence. Nothing is sent to a LinguaLens-controlled server because there isn't one. ━━━ Optional AI ━━━ Bring your own Anthropic API key for Claude-powered contextual reading of sarcasm, idioms, and cultural references. Off by default. Direct API access from your browser — billing on your own Anthropic account, never on us. ━━━ Open source ━━━ MIT licensed, written in TypeScript + React.
