Lingo - Learn Languages on YouTube
Overview
Learn languages while watching YouTube videos with AI-powered term detection and explanations
Learn English the way native speakers actually use it — through your day-to-day online content, starting with YouTube. Lingo is an AI-powered language-learning companion that lives where you already are. As you watch, Lingo reads the subtitles in real time and highlights expressions that textbooks don't teach: slang, idioms, phrasal verbs, cultural references, and the casual expressions Americans use every day. Each term comes with a clear definition and an example — right in the side panel, without pausing the video. Today Lingo works on YouTube; more platforms are coming. ═══ Who Lingo is for ═══ If you're a non-native English speaker with strong reading and writing (B2/C1, TOEFL 90+) but still get tripped up by: ▸ Phrasal verbs whose meaning isn't the sum of the parts ("pull in" ≠ pull + in) ▸ Slang from social media, TV, and movies ("no cap", "lit", "ghosting") ▸ Sarcastic intensifiers like sentence-final "much" ("obsessed much?") ▸ Cultural references and Americanisms ▸ Casual compound terms in conversation ("work-from-home", "post-breakup") Then Lingo is built for you. ═══ How it works ═══ 1. Open any YouTube video with English captions 2. Click the Lingo icon — the side panel opens 3. As you watch, Lingo detects terms worth learning and shows them on the side 4. Star the ones you want to keep — review them later in your dashboard That's it. No setup beyond pasting your free AI key once (see Privacy & API section below). ═══ Key features ═══ ✓ Real-time term detection from YouTube subtitles ✓ AI explanations with definition + example sentence ✓ Save terms to a personal vocabulary list ✓ Cross-device sync via free account (optional) ✓ Web dashboard for reviewing your saved words ✓ Side panel design — never blocks the video ✓ Works on any YouTube video with captions enabled ═══ Privacy & API ═══ Lingo runs on AI models from Google (Gemini) or Alibaba (Qwen). You bring your own free API key — instructions in the extension's Options page after install. This means: ▸ Your subtitle data goes only to the AI provider you choose ▸ Lingo's servers never see your subtitles or your API key ▸ Your usage is on your free API quota — no third party in the middle We collect only your email and the words you choose to save (if you create an account). Read the full privacy policy at https://v0-lingo-chrome-extension.vercel.app/privacy ═══ Open and honest ═══ ▸ No ads ▸ No tracking ▸ No data selling Built by a solo developer learning to ship. Feedback welcome — reach out via the email in the privacy policy. ═══ What's coming ═══ ▸ In-extension feedback button ("this detection was off / this should've been detected") — to keep improving the AI ▸ Multi-platform: Netflix, TikTok, podcasts ▸ Spaced-repetition review of your saved words ▸ AI conversation practice with your collected vocabulary Lingo is in early access. Updates ship frequently. ═══ Need a key? ═══ Free Gemini API key: https://aistudio.google.com/apikey Free Qwen API key: https://dashscope.aliyun.com (or international: dashscope-intl) Both providers offer free tiers that comfortably cover normal daily use.
