Lingaku: Learn Japanese with Videos & Web Browsing

Popup dictionary for websites and YouTube, with vocabulary size tracking, lookup history, and flashcards.

Read Japanese on the web without stopping to look things up somewhere else. Lingaku turns Japanese text on any website into something you can click. Tap a word, see what it means, carry on reading. Every word you look up is saved with the page and the sentence you found it in, so nothing gets lost. Requires a free Lingaku account (lingaku.com). Nothing is tracked or highlighted until you sign in. WHAT IT DOES Popup dictionary on any website Japanese text becomes clickable wherever you are – news, blogs, web novels, anything. Click a word for its meaning, reading and frequency. Click a kanji inside it for readings and meanings of the character itself. Furigana is added automatically. YouTube subtitles you can actually read Japanese subtitles get furigana and become clickable while the video plays. The video pauses while you read a definition and resumes when you close it. A transcript sits beside the player – click any line to jump back to it. Subtitle size, weight, colour and position are all adjustable. Words you know, highlighted Mark each word as New, Seen, Familiar, Known or Mastered. Lingaku then highlights them everywhere you read, so at a glance you can see what’s new on a page and what you’ve already got. Every lookup is kept Each lookup is saved with the page title, the URL, the sentence around the word, and – for videos – the timestamp. Months later you can still find where you first met a word. Search and filter your history by word, site, date, YouTube channel or how well you know it. A side panel for the page you’re on See the page’s difficulty level and how much of its vocabulary you already know before you commit to reading it. It also lists every word you looked up on that page, and lets you send them straight to a deck. Turn lookups into review Send the words you’ve looked up to a flashcard deck on lingaku.com, or study them directly from your lookup history without building a deck first. Cards keep the sentence you originally read. HOW PEOPLE USE IT Watch a Japanese YouTube video and click the words you don’t know as they come up. Read a news article or a web novel and get through it without leaving the page. Look back at the end of the week and turn what you actually came across into review material. GOOD TO KNOW A free Lingaku account is required. The extension does nothing until you sign in. Japanese only for now.
