Overview

Turn any website dark. Per-site memory, brightness and warmth controls, a night schedule, and a one-key shortcut.

Lights Off gives the whole web a dark mode - not just the handful of sites that happen to ship one. Press Alt+Shift+L and the page you are reading flips to dark. Press it again and it flips back. That is the entire learning curve. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT • Photos survive. Most invert-based dark modes leave photographs milky and washed out. Lights Off compensates for the page-level inversion mathematically, so images, video, and canvas come out looking exactly as the author intended. • It remembers. Flip a site once and it opens that way every time. Sites you never want touched go on a never-darken list and stay there. • It is instant. The correct styling is injected before the page paints, so you do not get the white flash that plagues other dark mode extensions. TUNE IT TO YOUR EYES Five sliders, all live as you drag: • Darkness - how far to invert, from soft charcoal to full black • Brightness - take the whole page down a notch • Contrast - sharpen or soften the result • Warmth - cut blue light for late-night reading • Greyscale - drain the colour when you want to focus Or pick a preset and get on with your day: Balanced, Midnight, Paper, Ember, or Dim. TWO MODES • Invert - flips light pages dark. This is what you want on most of the web. • Dim - leaves colours alone and just drops the glare. Best on sites that already have a dark theme. Lights Off notices when a page is already dark and suggests it for you. GO DARK ON A SCHEDULE • Manual - only the sites you switch on • Follow system - match your operating system's light/dark setting • Custom hours - dark between any two times • Sunset to sunrise - real solar times for wherever you are KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS • Alt+Shift+L - toggle dark mode on the current site • Alt+Shift+K - pause or resume Lights Off everywhere • Switch between Invert and Dim (assign your own key in chrome://extensions/shortcuts) PRIVACY Lights Off has no servers, no analytics, no accounts, and no remote code. Your site list and settings are stored locally in Chrome. Nothing about your browsing is collected or transmitted - ever. If you turn on sunset scheduling, your approximate coordinates are stored on your device and used only to compute sunrise and sunset times locally. KNOWN LIMITS Chrome does not allow extensions to run on its own pages (chrome://, the Web Store, and the new-tab page), so Lights Off cannot style those. Sites with unusually complex layered layouts can occasionally look odd - that is what the never-darken list is for, and bug reports are genuinely welcome.
