Light Dark Color Scheme Toggle

Set light or dark per site using Chrome's real color scheme preference. No color inversion, no injected themes.

This switches on a website's own dark mode. It does not invent one. Most dark mode extensions invert colors or paste a stylesheet over a site that was never designed for it — grey photos, unreadable shadows, blown-out logos. This one changes the browser's real color scheme preference, the same signal your operating system sends, and lets each site render the light or dark design its own designers built. That means it only works on sites that HAVE a dark theme. On a site with no dark design, nothing will happen — there is nothing to switch on. That is the tradeoff for never breaking a page that wasn't built for it. SETUP: ONE STEP, REQUIRED This uses Chrome's Web Preferences API, which Chrome has not turned on by default yet. Open chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-web-platform-features, set it to Enabled, and relaunch. The extension detects this on first use and walks you through it — it will not silently do nothing. PER SITE, NOT GLOBAL Click the toolbar icon to set the site you are on. Keep AWS in light and your inbox in dark; each one stays where you put it. Everything else follows a default you set once. NO FLASH The preference is applied before the page paints, so you never see a site load light and then snap to dark. KEYBOARD Alt+Shift+D toggles the current site. Three more commands are available unbound at chrome://extensions/shortcuts: toggle the default, clear this site's override, and go back to following your system. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No color inversion. No injected stylesheets. No page rewriting. No data collection, and no network requests of any kind. LIMITS, STATED PLAINLY - Needs the flag above. - Works on https:// and localhost. A plain http:// site cannot use the API. - Sites that ignore prefers-color-scheme and store their own theme setting will keep doing that. GitHub is the common one: set it to "sync with system" in GitHub's own appearance settings and this will drive it. - A site with no dark design has nothing to switch on.
