Overview

Right-click any word to add it to your Obsidian lexicon.

Lexophile is a personal dictionary that lives inside your Obsidian vault. Reading something on the web and you spot a word you want to remember? Highlight it, right-click, and pick "Add word to Obsidian." A definition note appears in your vault a second later, complete with the part of speech, definition, and a link back to the page you found it on. Over time you build up a permanent, searchable record of every word you've cared enough to look up. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHAT YOU GET ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ • One-click capture from any webpage via the right-click menu • Each word becomes its own markdown note in your vault • Every saved word links back to the source page • A Bases view of your full lexicon, sortable and searchable • Customizable note template, folder, and naming convention • Skip, append, or overwrite duplicates as you prefer ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ HOW IT WORKS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ This extension is the companion to the free Lexophile plugin for Obsidian. The plugin runs a small local server inside Obsidian; the extension sends saved words to it. The two authenticate with a shared token generated during the one-time setup, so only your own browser can write to your vault. You'll need: Obsidian (free, from obsidian.md) The Lexophile plugin ( ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PRIVACY ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Lexophile runs entirely on your machine. No accounts, no analytics, no cloud sync, no server we control. The extension makes exactly two kinds of network calls: To api.dictionaryapi.dev to fetch the definition of the word you saved To 127.0.0.1 (your own computer) to hand that definition to Obsidian Your saved words never leave your computer. The extension does not read or transmit page contents beyond the single word you actively right-click on. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ OPEN SOURCE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Lexophile is MIT licensed.
