Leftover Text Finder
Overview
Find what shouldn't be on a live page: dummy text, unfilled template tags, "undefined" and "NaN", garbled characters, broken images.
Catch the leftovers before your visitors do. A page can look finished and still show a price of "NaN €", a greeting that says "Hello {{ name }}", a footer with "[Company Name]", or umlauts that turned into "ü" after an import. Leftover Text Finder checks the page you are looking at with one click and lists everything that should never have gone live, most serious first. WHAT IT FINDS • Dummy text: lorem ipsum and other filler, including German filler text, and phrases such as "Your headline goes here" • Unfilled template tags: {{ }}, {% %}, <%= %>, ${ }, [[ ]], %%NAME%%, {FIRST_NAME}, {count}, %s • Placeholders to fill in: [Your Name], [Phone Number], [Insert logo], xxx, TBD • Values printed by code: undefined, NaN, [object Object], Invalid Date, Infinity, a lone null • Garbled characters: text read in the wrong encoding, shown with the text it probably should be; replacement characters; HTML entities shown as text • Broken images, images with no address and placeholder images • Development leftovers: links and images pointing at localhost, private network addresses, file:// or staging hosts; TODO and FIXME notes; test data such as test@test.com • A default page title ("Document", "Untitled") and dummy text in the meta description or link-preview tags HOW IT WORKS 1. Open a page and click the toolbar button. The check runs immediately. 2. Findings are sorted by severity: High (a mistake every visitor can see), Medium (probably a leftover), Low (worth a look but often intended, hidden unless you ask). 3. "Show" scrolls to a finding and flashes it. "Highlight on page" outlines every finding in orange. "Copy report" copies a plain-text list for a ticket or an email. BUILT TO AVOID FALSE ALARMS • Ignores code samples, so documentation that shows template syntax is not flagged • Checks only what visitors can see, not closed menus or inactive tabs • Treats "undefined" in an ordinary sentence as low severity • Works during development: links to local addresses are fine when the page itself is local PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Runs only when you click it, only on the current tab (activeTab permission) • No host permissions, no background activity, no access to your history • Collects no data: no analytics, no servers, no account, nothing stored • All code is inside the extension; nothing is downloaded or executed from elsewhere LIMITS The rules are heuristics: read each finding before you change anything. It checks the main page, not frames embedded from other sites, and only what has loaded. Browsers do not allow extensions on internal pages or the extension store.
