WordMate
Overview
Look up words: meaning, synonyms, antonyms & examples in 8 languages, auto-detected.
**New in 1.5** Lookups are faster: the definition appears as soon as it is ready instead of waiting for every source, and repeat words open instantly from the on-device cache. The tooltip now renders in its own shadow root, so page styles can no longer break it, and it works on more sites. A speaker button next to the phonetic text pronounces the word aloud, in its own language, using your browser's built-in speech. You can also star words to keep them: saved words wait in the toolbar popup, on your device only, and can be exported as a TSV file for flashcard apps. Clicking through synonyms now has a back arrow. Dark mode, contrast and keyboard support were polished, and WordMate has a new icon. **Understand any word, right where you read it.** WordMate is a lightweight dictionary that lives inside every web page. Select any word — double-click it or drag across it — and a small WordMate button appears. Click it, and a compact tooltip shows you: - **Meaning** — clear, concise definitions with part of speech and pronunciation - **Synonyms & antonyms** — the 20 closest matches, each clickable for its own lookup - **Example sentences** — real usage examples so the word sticks No popups, no new tabs, no clutter. The tooltip is small, scrollable, and disappears the moment you scroll or click elsewhere. **Eight languages, auto-detected** English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified input works too; definitions display in Traditional). WordMate detects the word's language automatically and shows the entry in that language. You can also pin a language from the toolbar. **Private by design** WordMate has no accounts, no analytics, and no ads. The only data that ever leaves your browser is the word you look up, sent to free dictionary services to fetch its entry. Your language preference is stored locally on your device. See the full privacy policy for details. **Free forever** Dictionary data comes from free, open sources: FreeDictionaryAPI.com and each language's own Wiktionary for definitions, plus Datamuse and Tatoeba for extra synonyms, antonyms, and examples.
