Latin Dictionary
Overview
Beginner-friendly, offline Latin word analysis powered by Whitaker's Words.
Latin Dictionary makes Whitaker's Words easier for learners to use. HOW TO USE On an ordinary webpage: 1. Select up to 20 Latin words. 2. Press Ctrl+C twice quickly (Cmd+C twice on a Mac). 3. Read the analysis panel that opens beside the selection. For text from a PDF, Word, Notes, or a restricted browser page: 1. Copy the Latin text. 2. Click the Latin Dictionary icon in Chrome's toolbar or Extensions menu. 3. Paste the text and select “Explain this Latin”. Chrome does not allow extensions to run directly on Chrome Web Store pages, chrome:// pages, or certain protected documents. Use the toolbar paste method for text copied from those places. FEATURES • Works entirely offline after installation. • Shows the most likely reading first while preserving genuine ambiguity: valid alternatives remain available instead of being silently discarded. • Expands grammatical labels into beginner-friendly explanations. • Recognises macrons, common i/j spellings, consonantal u/v spellings, attached -que, -ve and -ne, and common syncopated perfect forms. • Sends no selected or pasted text to a server. LICENSING The complete dictionary engine and all derived browser dictionary data come from Whitaker's Words 0.7.0 and are distributed under its permissive MIT licence. The licence allows use, copying, modification and redistribution; its full text and attribution are included with the extension. Latin Dictionary is an independent interface and is not endorsed by Whitaker's Words' authors or contributors.
