Overview

All things dyslexia. A browser extension to help with reading and understanding text on the web.

Make websites easier to read and understand. Dyslexia Extension v0.3.1 helps people with dyslexia or low literacy by providing in-place word explanations, comfortable visual styles, and flexible font settings that reduce strain and support focus. Key features: * Tap-to-define: Click on underlined words to get short, context-aware definitions powered by OpenAI's gpt-4.1-nano model. * Ask-the-page tools: Summarize long articles, ask questions about the page, or pre-process content for instant answers. * Visual overlays: Reduce screen glare with a pastel color tint. Control intensity using a slider. * Reader-friendly fonts: Switch to OpenDyslexic or Lexend Deca. Adjust letter spacing, word spacing, and line height. * Bionic Reading mode: Bold the beginning of each word to guide the eyes and improve readability. * Fast and private caching: Avoid repeated API calls using a combination of in-memory and persistent storage (IndexedDB). * Privacy-first: No tracking, no analytics, no external servers. Your OpenAI API key is stored locally in chrome.storage.sync. How to get started: 1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store. 2. Click the extension icon (puzzle piece > Dyslexia Extension) to open the popup. 3. Open the settings page and enter your OpenAI API key to enable AI features. Note: You must create an OpenAI account and add a minimum of 5 USD credit to use the API. Learn more at https://platform.openai.com Once your key is entered, underlined words will appear on most websites. Click them to see definitions. Use the popup to adjust overlay tints, enable Bionic Reading, or change typography. All settings are saved and synced across your devices. What’s new in v0.3.1: * Fix: Emojis are no longer bolded in Bionic Reading mode. * Fix: More consistent bolding across all words. * New: Instant API key validity check in settings. * Fix: Smoother interaction between Bionic Reading and Word Explainer. Built for Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. Uses Manifest V3 with no background service worker. Fonts are embedded for fast, offline performance. Created by Sam van Remortel.
