Open Bookmarks in New Tab
19 ratings
)Overview
Automatically opens clicked bookmarks in a new tab, preserving your current page.
Tired of replacing your current page whenever you click a bookmark? This extension opens HTTP(S) bookmarks in a new tab by default, with options to control focus and placement. If your current tab is empty, the bookmark opens there instead. ❗️👇 Please read the full description below 👇❗️ ❗️❗️❗️ UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS Please follow these steps BEFORE disabling or removing the extension: 1. Open the extension popup by clicking its toolbar icon. 2. Toggle the extension switch to OFF. 3. Allow bookmark restoration to finish. Check that your bookmarks no longer contain the newtab@ marker or redirect wrapper before uninstalling. Pausing through the popup restores your original bookmark URLs. Disabling or uninstalling directly through Chrome does not give the extension a chance to restore them. 🔧 HOW IT WORKS The extension adds a special marker (newtab@) to your bookmark URLs. When you click a marked bookmark, it opens the original destination and redirects the marked navigation to a local endpoint inside the extension. This endpoint returns an HTTP “204 No Content” response, allowing the current document to remain loaded without deliberately starting a download. The extension no longer uses dummy empty.zip downloads, download cancellation, or download-UI suppression. Some websites may still react to the initial navigation attempt, so uninterrupted media playback cannot be guaranteed. 🌐 FEATURES - Automatically open HTTP(S) bookmarks in a new tab. - Reuse the current tab when it is an empty/new-tab page. - Choose whether newly opened tabs receive focus. - Place new tabs at the end of the tab bar or immediately to the right. - Pause and resume from the toolbar popup. - Automatically handle new and edited bookmarks. - Switch between English and Chinese. - No dummy downloads, analytics, or developer-run data collection. ✅ OPEN SOURCE This extension is fully open source. Review the code, report issues, or contribute at: https://github.com/sssstf0rest/Open-Bookmarks-in-New-Tab ⚠️ PLEASE NOTE Bookmark URLs are modified while the extension is enabled. Back up important bookmarks before installation. For most HTTP(S) bookmarks, a marker is added: https://example.com → https://newtab@example.com Certain domains, including Gmail and Outlook, use a GitHub Pages redirect wrapper to handle browsers stripping the marker. These bookmarks may display the helper page’s favicon. If the helper loads as a fallback, its request includes the encoded destination URL and is sent to the hosting service. Non-HTTP(S) bookmarks, such as chrome://, edge://, and file:// pages, retain their normal behavior. New bookmarks are marked after a short editing delay to preserve renaming in Chrome’s bookmark dialog. During that delay, they may open in the current tab. Settings and modified bookmarks may sync between devices according to your Chrome settings. If a streaming website such as Spotify experiences playback interruptions, pause the extension and use Cmd/Ctrl-click or middle-click to open bookmarks manually. You can restore your bookmark URLs at any time: open the extension popup and toggle the switch to OFF.
