Answer WaniKani and BunPro reviews and lessons with your voice using the Web Speech API

Kikoe (聞こえ, "to be heard") lets you complete your WaniKani and BunPro reviews hands-free. Speak your answer instead of typing it: Kikoe listens, checks it against the accepted answers, and submits it for you. Speak your answers Say the reading in Japanese or the meaning in English during reviews, lessons, and quizzes. Kikoe switches between Japanese and English speech recognition based on the question type, so you don't have to think about input modes. Smart matching Speech-to-text has its quirks, so Kikoe corrects for common ones: • Romaji-to-hiragana conversion • Fuzzy vowel matching for long/short vowel confusion • Meaning typo tolerance on WaniKani, matching the site's own tolerance for small typos • Numeral recognition in both kanji and English • Suru verb normalization • Custom corrections: on the options page, map what Kikoe keeps mishearing to what you actually mean. Corrections apply on your next answer, no reload needed. Built for speed • Turbo mode: auto-advance to the next card on a correct answer • Ippatsu mode (一発): an optional one-shot challenge where a wrong answer auto-submits instead of allowing endless retries • Voice commands: "next" (次) to advance, "wrong" (間違い) to mark yourself incorrect, "pause" (ストップ) to mute the mic, "help" (ヘルプ) for the full list • In-page help: a ? button next to the listening indicator opens a cheat sheet of the commands available on the current card • Live transcript: an optional overlay shows what Kikoe heard in real time, and why an answer didn't match Works with • WaniKani: reviews, lessons, and quizzes (requires a read-only API token from your WaniKani settings) • BunPro: reviews with Fill In and Translate questions (no token needed) Setup • Install the extension • For WaniKani, paste a read-only API token into the options page (the indicator will point you there if it's missing) • Allow microphone access • Start a review and start talking Version 0.8.0 adds one-click corrections. When speech recognition hears the wrong phrase, Kikoe can show a correction bubble in the live transcript. Confirm it once and Kikoe saves that heard-to-intended mapping, then submits the correct answer for the current card. This helps repeated mishearings get fixed during a review session, without opening settings.
