Kenning — Hover Dictionary for English Learners
Overview
Hold Alt and point at any English word for its pronunciation, meaning and a translation — a hover dictionary for English learners.
Read English on the web without leaving the page — a hover dictionary for English learners, whatever your first language. Hold Alt and point at any English word. A small card opens on the spot with the pronunciation (IPA and audio), the part of speech, a short English definition, an example sentence and a translation into the language you choose. Move on and it closes. UNDERLINES THE WORDS YOU ARE LIKELY NOT TO KNOW A dictionary of 58,000 headwords is bundled inside the extension, graded by how common each word is and by the word lists of the major English exams. Pick your level, and words above it are underlined before you hover them. Turn on "meanings above the words" and a short gloss is drawn above each underlined word (in Chinese, for now), so a hard paragraph reads like an annotated one. Grading happens inside the extension: it reads every word on the page and sends none of them anywhere. CHECK A PAGE BEFORE YOU READ IT One press tells you how many words on the page are above your level, what share of the page that is, and the twelve hardest words with their meanings. PHRASES AND SENTENCES Select a phrase and hold Alt: a card opens on it. Translate it with one press (up to a dozen words), or keep the whole sentence for later without translating anything. A WORD LIST THAT LEARNS WITH YOU Tick a word as known or star it to save it, with the sentence you met it in. The word list page reviews saved words on a spaced-repetition schedule, with three kinds of drill, a daily goal and a streak. A vocabulary check sets your level by asking, not by guessing. A READING LIST Save the page you are reading, or drop in a PDF or a YouTube transcript, and read it later in a clean reader with every feature above. BILINGUAL PARAGRAPHS Show a translation under each paragraph, in your language, using the browser's own on-device translator. Nothing is sent anywhere; the only download is the translator model, once, from your browser's vendor. PRIVACY, BY CONSTRUCTION No account. No analytics. Nothing about you is collected. The only thing that leaves your browser is the single word you looked up, sent to a public dictionary and a public translation service without cookies. Your word list, saved sentences and reading list stay on your device. Two optional features can send more — sync to a server you deploy yourself, and sentence translation by an AI model with your own credentials — and each is off until you set it up. The full policy is short and worth reading. WORKS WHERE YOU READ Enabled on Reddit out of the box. Press Enable in the popup for any other site, or switch All sites on once. Pause a site with Alt+Shift+K, underlining with Alt+Shift+M. Dictionary data: ECDICT (Lin Wei, CC BY-SA 4.0). Definitions: dictionaryapi.dev, and ECDICT's own English (WordNet) when it cannot answer. Translation: MyMemory, your own DeepL key, or the browser's on-device translator.
