AiKan (爱看) — Chinese/Japanese/Korean Dual Subtitles + AI: Netflix, YouTube
Overview
Hover any word for instant readings and meaning. Free to use — bring your own AI key for grammar breakdowns and nuance notes.
Turn your K-drama, J-drama and C-drama nights into real study time. AiKan (爱看 — "love to watch") sits below Netflix and YouTube videos and displays dual-language subtitles as an interactive transcript for learners of Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Hover any word: the video pauses, and you get its reading (pinyin, furigana or romanization) and meaning, right there. Move away, keep watching. Before you know it, you've watched an entire series and learned a whole bunch of words in an enjoyable context! You'll see a bunch of extensions like this on the store. AiKan doesn't try to sell you a subscription—core features "just work", and additional AI features like grammar breakdowns can be added using an API key from your existing OpenAI/Claude/Gemini subscription or OpenRouter account. Don't know what that means? We'll make this easier over time as AI providers make their services easier to use across apps. WATCH LIKE A LEARNER • Hover a word to pause and see reading + translation • Step through a line word by word, or replay the whole line • Dual subtitles: keep an English line under the original if you want it • Reveal mode hides translations until you ask — test yourself, then check • Slow the video down for an easier experience REAL DICTIONARIES BUILT IN • Chinese: CC-CEDICT with pinyin and Simplified/Traditional • Japanese: JMdict with furigana shown according to your WaniKani account or JLPT level • Korean: KRDict, the national learners' dictionary, with smart handling of conjugated forms • Everything is bundled and works offline. No account, no sign-up, nothing to configure before your first episode. AI GRAMMAR NOTES (OPTIONAL) Press one key and the line on screen gets a natural translation, its grammar points and idioms explained — each one clickable to see exactly which words it covers. Bring your own API key (Google Gemini has a free tier, so this can cost nothing; Anthropic, OpenAI and OpenRouter also work). Requests go straight from your browser to your provider, and every analysed line is cached on your device so rewatching doesn't come out of your account usage. MADE FOR KEYBOARD PEOPLE Navigate the show without lifting your hand from the keyboard. Previous line, replay, next line on the A-S-D row. Word stepping on Q-E. Breakdowns on W. Press "/" for the full shortcut list. Also supports AZERTY, QWERTZ and Dvorak! PRIVATE BY DESIGN No analytics, no account, no data collection. Subtitles are looked up locally; nothing you watch is sent to us — ever. The extension runs only on netflix.com and youtube.com and does nothing anywhere else. From the makers of trainchinese, the Chinese dictionary and flash card system trusted by learners for over 15 years. Chinese words link straight to their full trainchinese entries. 爱看 means "love to watch." Watch what you love — and learn a language!
