Color Contrast Checker — WCAG 2.2 AA/AAA — ContrastForge
Overview
Check color contrast against WCAG 2.2 AA/AAA. Eyedropper, full-page scan, and exportable audit reports. Local-only, no tracking.
It finds every contrast failure on the page — and writes up what's wrong with each one. Checking a single colour pair takes seconds. Producing the deliverable is what eats the afternoon: screenshotting each failure, looking up the criterion it breaches, explaining it in plain English, and finding a passing colour that still looks like the brand. ContrastForge does the scan and drafts the document. IT OPENS, AND IT WORKS Everything is computed locally and synchronously, with no network call and nothing to wait on, so the popup cannot fail to open. That sounds like a low bar. It is the bar this tool was built to clear. GETS THE HARD COLOURS RIGHT Reading a single pixel is not enough the moment a page uses real design, so ContrastForge resolves what a person actually sees: • Semi-transparent text or backgrounds — alpha is composited properly up the whole ancestor chain, so rgba() overlays report the colour a human actually sees • Stacked translucent layers — each one composited in order, not guessed • Correct large-text classification (24px, or 18.66px at weight 700+), so you aren't told to fix text that already passes • Hidden and invisible elements skipped, instead of padding the failure count • Gradient backgrounds tested at their worst colour stop — the point where the text is least legible — instead of one arbitrary pixel • Elements over background images are reported as unchecked rather than estimated, because their real pixels cannot be known from CSS CHECK ANY PAIR, FREE • Foreground and background as hex, RGB or HSL — all parsed • Eyedropper picks any colour on the page • Live ratio with four verdicts at once: AA normal, AA large, AAA normal, AAA large • When a pair fails, one click applies the nearest passing colour that keeps the hue — so the fix survives the brand conversation • Live "Aa" preview of the pair as you adjust it SCAN THE WHOLE PAGE, AND EXPORT THE REPORT (PRO) • Full-page scan: every visible text element, with its true composited background • Click any result to scroll to that element and outline it on the page • Export a paginated PDF report with the page URL, date, summary counts, colour swatches, measured vs required ratios and a verified passing colour for each finding — or a CSV for your issue tracker • Reports carry your own logo and business name, so they go to a client unedited • Each finding cites the WCAG 2.2 criterion it breaches (1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum), 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast) • Multi-page audits: paste a list of URLs, scan them all, and export one combined report with each finding labelled by the page it came from • Saved palettes — check a whole brand palette against itself in one pass • Scan history, kept locally WHAT THIS IS NOT ContrastForge checks colour contrast. It is not a full accessibility audit: it does not test keyboard navigation, focus order, heading structure, alt text or ARIA, and it will not tell you a site is compliant. axe DevTools and WAVE are free, cover far more of WCAG, and are worth running alongside this. ContrastForge exists because none of them turn what they find into a document you can hand to a client. PRIVACY IS THE PRODUCT • 100% local: every scan runs in your browser, on the tab you are looking at • Access to the active tab only, at the moment you click — no standing access to the other sites you visit, and no content script running in the background • The pages you audit are never uploaded, never stored by us, never seen by anyone • No analytics, no tracking, no ads, no remote code, no account • The only network request we ever make is a one-time license check if you choose to buy Pro — nothing else, ever • Full policy: https://sapirsoftware.github.io/contrastforge-privacy.html FREE vs PRO Free: the two-colour checker, eyedropper, all four WCAG 2.2 verdicts, and accessible-colour suggestions. Unlimited, forever. Pro ($49/month): full-page scanning, click-to-highlight, exportable audit reports, saved palettes and scan history — built for people who are paid to produce accessibility findings. ContrastForge is built by Sapir Software — small tools, done right, with nothing to hide.
