Double-click a word while holding a modifier key to open its Wiktionary entry as an overlay, right where you are.

Wiktionary Peek shows a word's Wiktionary entry in a small panel over the page you are reading. Hold a modifier key, double-click a word, and the entry opens right where you are — no new tab, no scrolling back to find your place afterwards. It was built for reading in a language you are still learning, where you need the sense and the inflection table of one word and then want to keep going. WHAT IT DOES • Looks up the word as it appears on the page. Study texts and quoted forms rarely match the headword exactly, so the spelling is loosened only when the exact form is not found: amābam → amabam, Puella → puella, θᾰ́λᾰσσᾰ → θάλασσα. Languages that genuinely spell with marks (café, tiếng) are never broken, and when a rewrite was used the panel says so. • Opens the language you actually want. A single Wiktionary page lists the same spelling for every language that has it — "amo" carries 43 of them. Wiktionary Peek picks the section by your preferred languages, by the lang attribute on the page, and by what you chose last time on that site. Chips along the top switch between the languages on the page. • Keeps you inside the panel. Click a word in a definition to look it up in place, and press ‹ to come back to what you were reading, at the position you left it. ↗ opens the full Wiktionary page in a tab when you want the whole entry. • Stays where you put it. Drag the bar to move the panel, drag any edge or corner to resize it, and the size is remembered next time. Inflection tables fold and unfold. • Is quick on repeats. Only the section you asked for is fetched rather than the whole page, and every step is cached for the session, so looking a word up again — or switching between the languages on one page — costs no network at all. SETTINGS • The lookup key: Option / Alt, Command / Windows, Control, Shift, or none at all • Which Wiktionary to read: English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese • Preferred languages, in the order you want them tried • Whether the page's own language counts as a hint, and whether the language you pick is remembered per site • Whether inflection tables start expanded • Sites to leave alone The interface is available in English and Japanese, and follows your Chrome language setting. PRIVACY No accounts, no tracking, no analytics, and nothing is ever sent to the developer. The extension talks to wiktionary.org and to nothing else. Your settings live in Chrome's own storage, and the words you look up are kept only in memory for the session so the same word does not have to be fetched twice. GOOD TO KNOW • It does not run inside iframes, inside the PDF viewer, or on chrome:// and Chrome Web Store pages, because extensions cannot be injected there. • Audio playback buttons are removed from the panel; IPA transcriptions are kept. • Definitions come from Wiktionary and are licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.
