Overview

Configurable buttons and shortcuts for iNaturalist: bulk annotations, tags, fields, projects, and a URL filter builder.

The iNaturalist Metadata Tool is a browser extension built for power users of iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/) — identifiers, reviewers, project curators, and anyone who finds themselves repeating the same handful of clicks dozens of times a day. What you can do once installed and configured: **Bind any iNat action to a keyboard shortcut or button** - Annotations (life stage, sex, plant phenology, etc.) - Observation field values - Taxon identifications (with optional disagreement) - Comments - Project additions and removals - Quality metric (Data Quality Indicator) votes - Follow / unfollow observations - Mark reviewed / unreviewed - Copy a field value from one observation to another - Add / remove from your own personal lists - Tags **Run bulk actions** across many observations at once, with a single up-front prompt for any user-supplied values (e.g. "tag all 80 of these with X"). A pre-flight validation modal shows you what will change and what will be skipped (Safe Mode prevents accidental overwrites). **Build complex iNat Identify-page URLs** through the included Advanced Filter URL Generator — quality grade, taxon categories, geographic regions (with a draggable map), place IDs, dates, annotations, and more. **Multiple configuration sets** let you swap whole button layouts depending on what kind of work you're doing — one set for a specific taxon project, another for general identification, etc. Import and export configuration sets to share with collaborators. Configuration lives on the options page. Each action type has inline guidance. **Privacy posture:** the extension does not collect or transmit any data to the maintainer. Your configurations are stored locally in your browser. iNaturalist API calls use your own OAuth token to your own iNat account; there is no maintainer-controlled server. The in-extension issue reporter opens a pre-filled GitHub URL in a new tab — you submit (or not) on GitHub's own page. Full privacy policy: https://github.com/Megachile/inathelperJS/blob/main/PRIVACY.md **Open source** (MIT license). Source, issue tracker, and contributing guide at https://github.com/Megachile/inathelperJS **Feedback welcome.** This is an evolving tool built by and for heavy iNat users. If something is broken, confusing, or missing, please open an issue — or use the in-extension "Report an Issue" form on the options page. Even half-formed thoughts are useful.
