Overview
Turns prices into the hours of your life they cost. Private, on-device.
Ikiru turns every price you see online into something more honest: the amount of your life you'd trade for it. $60 sneakers? "1h 14m" of your time. $2,400 couch? "2 days, 2h" of your time. $8 lunch? "10m" of your time. It's the same number, just measured in the currency you actually can't get more of — hours. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ HOW IT WORKS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 1. Tell Ikiru what you make (annual salary, hourly wage, or take-home pay per paycheck). 2. Browse normally. Ikiru quietly replaces dollar amounts on shopping sites, news articles, anywhere — with the time equivalent in a small inline badge. 3. Hover any badge to see the original price and a longer breakdown. Math is done with your *post-tax, take-home* hourly rate, using 2025 U.S. federal brackets and standard deduction. You can override the rate manually, set a custom pay frequency (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly), and toggle rounding. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PRIVACY (READ THIS) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ • Your wage, settings, and history NEVER leave your computer. • Zero network requests. Zero analytics. Zero telemetry. • No accounts, no sign-in, no cloud sync. • All processing happens locally in your browser. • Storage is chrome.storage.local — readable only by this extension on your machine. The extension only reads page text in order to find prices and inject the time badge. That's it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHAT'S CONVERTED ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✓ Standard text prices ($, €, £, ¥, more) ✓ Amazon's split-DOM prices (.a-price components) ✓ Discount/sale price layouts (–18% $409.99 → –18% [7h 6m]) ✓ Price ranges ($20–$30) ✓ Live-updating prices via MutationObserver ✓ Tooltip on hover with original price + breakdown ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHY "IKIRU" ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Ikiru (生きる) is Japanese for "to live." It's the title of a 1952 Kurosawa film about a bureaucrat who realizes he has months left and finally asks what his time was worth. Most price tags answer the wrong question: "What does this cost me in money I'll just earn back?" Ikiru answers the real one: "How much of my finite life am I trading for this?" ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SUPPORT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Issues, ideas, or wage-math edge cases?
