Overview
(1) Hide the Gmail buttons you never use (2) keep the subject in view (3) clean up in one click (4) bring back the yellow star.
Gmail has a lot of buttons. You use a few of them every day. Clean Gmail lets you keep those and hide the rest, one click each. Open the Clean Gmail popup, choose Select buttons to hide, and click any button in Gmail: in the toolbar, in the left navigation, or a smart chip. It disappears. Changed your mind? Hidden buttons show faded while you pick; click one to bring it back, or show everything again from the settings. Nothing is deleted. Buttons are hidden with a style rule, so Gmail itself is never changed. FIVE MORE SMALL FIXES Structured header The subject and sender of the email you are reading stay on top while the message scrolls, in lined sections with every recipient in full. Print and New window move into the More menu. Choose how many lines the subject may take, where its labels go and its background, and whether the sender stays on top. Archive+ (optional) A button to the left of Archive that also marks the conversation read and removes its labels, in one click. Choose which labels go, whether the star goes too, and Gmail's Undo or a full undo that puts everything back. Works in a conversation and for conversations selected in the list, with a keyboard shortcut (W). Off until you turn it on. Star colors (optional) Gmail's redesign turned the default star and the importance markers blue. Bring back the classic yellow, or pick orange, red, green or purple, separately for stars and markers. Other star types keep their colors. Off until you turn it on. Smart buttons in the toolbar Summarise this email and Add to Calendar become small icons next to the message counter, named on hover, so the message starts right under the subject. Email links open in Gmail (optional) Click an email address on any website and a Gmail compose window opens: in a popup, a new tab, a background tab or your Gmail tab. Off until you turn it on. SETTINGS INSIDE GMAIL A Clean Gmail tab in Gmail Settings, with an example on every option. Every feature has its own switch, and one main switch pauses everything while keeping your choices. PRIVACY Clean Gmail runs on mail.google.com and makes no network requests. No analytics, no tracking, no account, no remote code. Email content is never stored or sent anywhere. Your settings, including the names of the buttons you hid and the labels you pick for Archive+, are kept in Chrome's storage. Access to all websites is optional and only requested when you turn on email links, because an email link can be on any site. It is released again when you turn the feature off.
