Overview

Lets your HB Code Desktop coding agent use your Chrome to search, read pages, take screenshots, and act in the tabs you request.

HB Code Browser Bridge lets the coding agent in HB Code Desktop use your own Chrome. Ask the agent to research documentation, read a page as Markdown, fill in a form, click through a web app, or take a screenshot. Each browser step returns to the run timeline in HB Code Desktop through Chrome native messaging, so you can open what the agent saw and did. Browser actions are available to Codex sessions and Claude Code sessions in HB Code Desktop. Codex sessions run on your own ChatGPT subscription. Claude Code sessions run on your own Claude account. The extension doesn't sell or include an AI subscription, and you don't need to buy anything extra for it. HB Code is an independent app and is not affiliated with OpenAI or Anthropic. Codex is a trademark of OpenAI. Claude Code is a trademark of Anthropic. When you ask HB Code to use Chrome, the extension can open or reuse tabs, search the web, go back, forward, or reload, read visible page text and Markdown (also inside iframes and shadow DOM, and long lists that load while you scroll), list the controls on a page, click, double-click, right-click, hover, drag and drop, type, press keys, scroll, select options, set checkboxes and switches, attach a local file you selected to an upload field, answer a JavaScript alert, confirm, or prompt, report downloads that a page starts, read the page's console messages, uncaught errors, and failed network requests, switch a tab to dark mode or a phone-size viewport for testing, take page screenshots (optionally with numbered marks on the controls), and close the tabs it opened. Clicks and typing use real Chrome input, so pages receive the same trusted input events as from a person. While the agent works in a tab, the page shows a soft frame, a cursor, and a label such as Click "Save", and the toolbar icon shows a dot. The popup shows whether HB Code Desktop is connected, what to do when it is not, the current action, and the last five actions. Chrome also shows its own bar that says the extension is debugging the browser, while the agent works in that tab and for about 30 seconds after its last action. The extension never types into password fields or payment card fields (card number, security code, expiry); the agent asks you to fill them in. Search commands open Google Search and send the query to Google. Status responses include the URLs and titles of every open tab so HB Code can target the requested tab. Normal-profile navigation stays in Chrome history under your Chrome settings. The extension doesn't request history permission, and it doesn't read or delete browsing history. The extension acts only on commands from HB Code Desktop. It doesn't request cookie permission or export cookies. Visible pages, screenshots, console messages, URLs, downloads, and selected files can contain sensitive information. Browser results return to the agent as tool output. They are stored in the local session and sent to the AI provider of that session's agent: OpenAI for a Codex session, Anthropic for a Claude Code session. When an agent asks HB Code for an HTML report, a Codex worker checks the report preview in a separate Chrome window, and those results go to OpenAI, in a Claude Code session too. Screenshots and full page extractions are also written to the local HB Code cache. The current release doesn't delete those cache files automatically. HB Code Desktop must be installed, with Browser Bridge turned on in Settings > Connections. The desktop app then registers the native host com.hbcode.browser_bridge and returns browser results to the run timeline. The extension needs Chrome 125 or later.
