Overview

Turn supported web video and local image or video files into customizable ASCII art.

ASCII Frame turns supported browser video — plus image and video files you choose from your device — into customizable ASCII art, rendered locally in your browser. Use it on supported HTML5 video pages, or open an image or video file from your device. Open the extension popup and choose Local media viewer to select a file. Watch motion or still images rendered as characters, color palettes, and visual styles — from clean monochrome text to GPU-powered color and Matrix-inspired modes. Animated image files are intentionally converted as a still frame; local video remains live. With a canvas renderer, Download ASCII saves the rendered image frame as PNG or records rendered local video as WebM. Local image and video ASCII downloads now preserve the selected file's original pixel dimensions. Rendering runs locally on your device. ASCII Frame does not transmit selected media or rendered output off-device. Choose which controls appear in the popup's Quick settings panel from All settings. The original renderer, visual mode, theme, character set, and performance controls remain available, and Resolution or FPS can be pinned when you want faster access. Features: - Live ASCII overlay for supported browser video. - Multiple renderer profiles: Battery Saver, Balanced, and Quality. - Character sets, themes, palettes, and performance controls. - Configurable Quick settings in the popup, including optional Resolution and FPS controls. - PNG export for rendered local images and WebM recording for rendered local video when using a canvas renderer. - Keyboard, toolbar, and on-page controls. - Graceful handling when protected or cross-origin video blocks frame sampling. - Local image and video workflow for files you choose on your device; animated images are converted as a still frame. Important compatibility note: ASCII Frame works best on supported, unprotected HTML5 video. DRM-protected streams and some cross-origin video sources can prevent browser pixel sampling, so not every site or video can be converted. Download ASCII requires a canvas renderer; DOM Text reports that it has no downloadable canvas output. Privacy note: ASCII Frame renders locally in the browser. On supported pages it reads the current page URL and video content locally to recognize the site and run the overlay; it does not retain a browsing-history list or transmit URLs, selected images, video frames, screenshots, or downloaded output off-device. PNG or WebM output is saved through the browser only when you explicitly request a download. Extension settings use Chrome extension storage and may sync through your browser account; they are not sent to ASCII Frame.
