Turn your favorite Netflix shows and YouTube videos into English practice you'll want to come back to. LearnSub brings dual subtitles, an offline dictionary, word pronunciation and sentence-by-sentence practice to the video page, helping you understand what you watch and build your listening skills at your own pace. - Understand English as you watch Display English subtitles alongside a second subtitle track provided by the video. Adjust subtitle size, color and position, or keep the most recent subtitles visible during gaps in dialogue so you have time to read and review. - Look up words right in the subtitles Hover over an English word to preview its meaning. Click a word included in the dictionary to see more definitions, its part of speech, phonetic transcription and word forms where available. Entries show a few meanings first, with more available to expand when you need them. - Choose the dictionary language that works for you Use English definitions to practice understanding English through English, or explore bilingual dictionaries in a range of languages. Bilingual entries can also include English definitions for reference. The dictionaries are included with the extension, and word lookups run locally on your device. - Listen to words and full subtitle segments Turn “Pronounce words on hover” and “Pronounce words on lookup” on or off separately, or click the pronunciation icon whenever you want to hear a word. Automatic English subtitle reading offers three modes: “Before dialogue,” “With dialogue” and “After dialogue.” You can also adjust the reading speed. - Practice the parts you didn't catch Go to the previous or next sentence, replay the current sentence, or put it on a loop. Adjust the video playback speed as you practice recognizing connected speech, intonation and rhythm. - Make time to think and repeat aloud Enable automatic pauses at the end of each sentence to give yourself time to understand, recall or repeat what you heard. Set playback to resume after a chosen delay, with extra pause time based on subtitle length. To practice listening first, delay the subtitles, listen to the original audio, then check what you understood. - Make the learning interface your own Drag the subtitles and control panel into place, and enable or disable LearnSub separately for Netflix and YouTube. Choose your interface and dictionary languages independently. Supported languages are English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai and Arabic. LearnSub is free to use and doesn't require a LearnSub account. Whether you want to rely less on subtitles in your native language, build your vocabulary, or practice listening and repeating with videos you enjoy, you can start with a short piece of dialogue. LearnSub currently works on Netflix and regular YouTube video pages on desktop. Learning features require accessible English subtitles in a compatible format; the second subtitle depends on the languages actually provided by the video. Automatically generated English captions and captions automatically translated into English on YouTube are supported only when confirmed to display in complete blocks. Word-by-word, progressively appended and rolling captions are not supported. YouTube Shorts, live streams and embedded players are not currently supported. Video playback and subtitle retrieval still require an internet connection, and some browser voices may also need one. Dictionary coverage and entry details vary with the available data.
