Hush PDF: Offline PDF Editor, OCR & Redact

Overview
Merge, split, edit, sign, OCR, redact & password-protect PDFs 100% offline in Chrome. No uploads, no account, no subscription.
Open DevTools, watch the Network panel, and work with a PDF in Hush: you will not see a single request. That is the whole product. Hush PDF is a free, offline PDF editor for Chrome — merge, split, reorder, sign, fill forms, OCR scanned pages, redact sensitive text, remove hidden metadata, compress and password-protect PDFs, all on your own computer. Redaction and encryption are re-checked before the file is written, not just promised. One permission (storage), no account, no subscription. WHO IT IS FOR Lawyers, accountants, HR teams, freelancers and anyone who handles contracts, invoices, medical or ID documents and does not want to paste them into a cloud PDF tool. VERIFY IT YOURSELF Open Hush PDF once, disconnect from the internet, then merge, split, clean, edit, sign, redact, OCR, or compress a PDF. Open the extension page's DevTools Network panel, clear the log and work with a PDF without clicking purchase or restore. Filter for http:// and https://. The expected result during PDF work is zero outbound HTTP(S) requests. Local chrome-extension://, blob: and data: entries are not uploads. Open Chrome's extension details and inspect the permission surface: Hush requests only storage, used for a small local Pro-status cache. FREE FEATURES Merge multiple PDFs into one file in your chosen order — each source file's bookmarks are kept and nested under an entry named after that file, so the merged PDF still has a working table of contents. Images → PDF: Convert JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC photos into a single PDF (one image per page, correct orientation); HEIC is decoded on your device. Split / Extract: Pull a page range or hand-picked pages into a new PDF. Split into files: Split one PDF into many in one go (by page ranges, every N pages, each page, or bookmarks) as a single ZIP. Select, rotate, delete and reorder pages in a virtualized thumbnail grid. Dark mode: the workspace follows your system theme automatically. Crop pages: trim borders or a column from selected or all pages; readers show only the cropped area. Find in document: search the loaded PDF's text as you type and jump to the matching page; Turkish dotted/dotless i match each other, and scanned pages are sent to on-device OCR instead of an empty result. Bookmarks panel: browse the outline as a nested tree and jump to any page; export the list (title, level, destination) as CSV or .txt. Open password-protected PDFs you know the password to. The password is used on this device only and never stored; saving makes an unprotected copy. PDFs that are only edit-restricted (no open password) open directly; saving produces an unrestricted copy. Clean — remove hidden data: Inspect metadata, XMP, embedded files and JavaScript, and strip them in one click with a found → removed report. PRO FEATURES Open any page in a focused editor and add text (Unicode) or images, then save a PDF that looks identical in every reader. Sign documents with a drawn, typed or uploaded signature, stored only in your browser's local storage if you opt in. Fill PDF forms (text, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns) and optionally flatten them into permanent page content — or add your own text fields and checkboxes to any PDF so someone else can fill it. Highlight, underline, strike through and draw on pages in five colors, plus numbered page notes — baked into the page, readable everywhere. Recognize text (OCR) — make scans searchable: Bundled, on-device OCR (English + Turkish) with per-page progress. Save searchable PDFs with an invisible aligned text layer, export as .txt, or copy recognized text — line breaks and hyphenated words are joined into readable paragraphs (optional). No cloud, zero uploads. Extract tables & text: Detect table grids from positioned text and export to CSV or Excel (.xlsx). Export plain document text in reading order to .txt or .docx (plain paragraphs with line joining and hyphen merging you can switch off, layout is not preserved; runs 100% on-device). Redact: Draw black boxes to permanently rasterize and rebuild affected pages at 200 DPI. Underlying text, fonts, and annotations are destroyed, not hidden. Double-verified before saving. Compress image-heavy PDFs: View before/after file size and savings before saving. Set a target size (Under 2 / 5 / 10 MB, or type your own limit) or convert embedded images to grayscale. Fill a form from a table: One AcroForm PDF plus a CSV/Excel file becomes one filled copy per row, in a ZIP — columns mapped to fields, every row checked, every copy verified before the ZIP is offered; the table is read on your device. Password-protect a PDF with real AES-256 encryption, with a clear unrecoverable-password warning. Split by text on the page: Draw a box once over an invoice number, customer id or name, and Hush reads that same spot on every page, starts a new file when the value changes and names each file after what it read. Export selected pages as PNG or JPG. Add a watermark and page numbers with an approximate preview. Run one operation sequentially across multiple loaded PDFs and inspect each result. No limits on free features. Pay once for Pro, forever. That means no daily credits or operation quota for the free tools. Input safety limits still apply. Pro is a one-time $11.99 purchase, with an $8.99 launch price. There is no subscription. You can also try every Pro tool free for 7 days (ExtensionPay asks for an email to start the trial, one trial per email, no card required). PRIVACY AND PERMISSIONS PDF bytes, file names, page metadata and document operations are not sent by Hush PDF. Hush requests only the storage permission, used for the small local Pro-status cache and, if you opt in, your saved signature templates. It does not request broad host permissions, optional permissions or downloads permission. Runtime JavaScript, PDF workers, WASM (including local OCR engine and language data), fonts and supporting assets are packaged with the extension; Hush does not load remote code. Hush has no telemetry, advertising or analytics transport. THE ONE NETWORK EXCEPTION Buying Pro or restoring a purchase is not an offline action. Only after you deliberately click Unlock Pro or Restore purchase, Hush may open or contact https://extensionpay.com for payment or license recovery. That external page may use its own services. PDF bytes are not sent to ExtensionPay. FILE LIMITS Hush refuses invalid, zero-byte and non-PDF inputs with a clear message instead of promising to process every file. Password-protected PDFs open after you enter the password; a wrong password is a retryable prompt, not a dead end. Files over roughly 100 MB receive a performance warning; files over the 200 MB safety cap are refused. Compression may keep the original when a safe reduction is not available. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is there a free trial? Yes, you can try every Pro tool free for 7 days. ExtensionPay requires an email to start the trial (one trial per email, no credit card), and trial status is cached locally so it works offline. Does Hush PDF upload my files? No. Every operation runs inside the extension on your device. The only network call is the optional ExtensionPay purchase or restore, which never carries your files. Is Hush PDF free? Yes. Merge, split, images to PDF, page reorder, hidden-data cleaning and opening protected PDFs are free with no limits. Pro tools are a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Can Hush PDF redact a PDF permanently? Yes. Redacted pages are rasterized and rebuilt, so the text under a black box is removed from the file, not just covered — and Hush verifies that before saving. Does OCR work offline? Yes. The OCR engine (Tesseract, English and Turkish) is bundled inside the extension. Scanned pages become searchable without leaving your computer. Can I remove metadata and hidden data from a PDF? Yes. Hush shows the author, dates, XMP, attachments and scripts a PDF carries and removes them in one click, with a before/after report. Can Hush PDF convert PDF to Word or Excel? Partially. It extracts detected tables to CSV/XLSX and plain text to .txt/.docx. Page layout is not preserved; it is not a full PDF-to-Word converter. Why doesn't Hush open PDF links or replace my PDF viewer? Because it would need permission to read every page you visit. Hush asks only for "storage", so you open a PDF by choosing or dropping the file into Hush yourself — the extension never watches your browsing. Can I add fillable fields to a PDF? Yes. Pro adds text fields and checkboxes to any PDF: name them, mark a text field required or multiline, and save. They become real form fields that Adobe Reader, Preview and Chrome can fill. Can I search inside a PDF with Hush? Yes, free. The search box in the document header finds text on any page and jumps to it. Dotted and dotless i match each other, so Turkish documents behave as you expect. If the pages are scans with no text, Hush offers to run Recognize text first — on your device. Can I crop pages? Yes, free. Trim scanned borders or a column from one, several or all pages with a draggable rectangle. Readers show only the cropped area; the content underneath is not deleted — use Redact for that. What permissions does the extension need? Only "storage", for the local Pro status. No host permissions, no downloads permission, no telemetry.
