Overview

Audit hreflang annotations on any page: parse locale tags, catch invalid codes, verify return links, export CSV.

Hreflang Inspector reads the hreflang annotations on the page you have open and tells you in one click whether they are actually correct. WHAT IT CHECKS - Every hreflang annotation declared in the HTML head and in the HTTP headers - Language, script and region subtags validated against ISO 639-1 and ISO 3166-1 - Invalid codes, underscores instead of hyphens, region codes used as languages - Missing or duplicated x-default - Missing self-referencing annotation - Two different URLs declared for the same locale - Return links: fetches each declared alternate and verifies it points back - Page title, canonical URL and html lang shown alongside the results - Full CSV export WHY IT EXISTS Hreflang is the annotation most often declared and least often verified. A single wrong subtag, a missing self-reference or an alternate that does not link back is enough for the whole cluster to be ignored, and none of it shows up as an error anywhere. This extension puts that check one click away, on any page, without a crawl. PRIVACY Hreflang Inspector makes no network request other than the return-link check you trigger yourself. No analytics, no tracking, no accounts, no server. Nothing about the pages you inspect leaves your browser. Site icons are read from the browser's own local cache, not from a third-party favicon service. PERMISSIONS - activeTab and scripting — read the annotations from the page you are on, only when you click the icon. The page is never modified. - storage — remembers a session flag so a return-link check can resume after Chrome closes the popup. - favicon — shows the icon of the inspected site, from the local cache. - Host access — requested only when you click "Check return links", granted per domain by you, at that moment.
