Terminal Input Keys
Overview
Terminal-style navigation and editing shortcuts while editing text on the web.
Web Emacs Keys brings familiar Linux/Readline-style text editing shortcuts to text fields and editors on the web. Designed for Linux users accustomed to Emacs-style GTK and GNU Readline keybindings, it provides a more consistent editing experience across web applications such as ChatGPT, Gmail, and Google Chat. **Supported shortcuts** Cursor movement: - Ctrl+A — move to the beginning of the line - Ctrl+E — move to the end of the line - Ctrl+B / Ctrl+F — move backward / forward by one character - Ctrl+P — move to the previous line - Alt+B / Alt+F — move backward / forward by one word Editing: - Ctrl+H — delete the previous character - Ctrl+D — delete the next character - Ctrl+U — kill text to the beginning of the line - Ctrl+K — kill text to the end of the line - Ctrl+W — kill the previous word (where supported) - Ctrl+Y — yank (insert the most recently killed text) **Kill and Yank** Web Emacs Keys supports Emacs-style Kill and Yank operations. Text removed using Ctrl+U, Ctrl+K, or Ctrl+W is saved in a shared Kill buffer. Press Ctrl+Y to insert the most recently killed text at the cursor position. The Kill buffer is shared across text fields, pages, and tabs, allowing you to move text between different web applications without using the system clipboard. The buffer is kept only for the current browser session and is cleared when the session ends. Password fields and explicitly sensitive inputs are excluded. **Compatibility** The extension supports standard text inputs, textareas, and many contenteditable web editors. Shortcuts are handled only in supported editing contexts, preserving normal browser and website behavior elsewhere. Some browser-reserved shortcuts cannot be reliably overridden. In particular, Ctrl+N and Alt+D are intentionally unsupported. On Linux with the GNOME Emacs key theme enabled, Ctrl+W may be handled natively by Chromium. Compatibility may vary depending on the web editor and operating system. **Privacy** Web Emacs Keys does not collect or transmit browsing data or text input to external servers. To support Kill and Yank across tabs, the extension temporarily stores the most recently killed text in Chrome's session-only extension storage. This data is not saved permanently or synchronized between devices. No account or external service is required.
