Overview

Analysis of words using dictionaries and Wikipedia interlanguage links; transliteration of Semitic texts into the Hebrew script.

ע\ع (Ayn\Ayn) Lookup is a multilingual text-research browser extension that brings together dictionaries, translations, pronunciation resources, encyclopedias, and web search with local transliteration into Hebrew and Latin. EXPLORE TEXT WORD BY WORD Select a word or passage on any webpage and start a lookup using the context menu or a keyboard shortcut. You can also type or paste text directly into the Add-On. A dedicated research window displays the complete text, allowing you to click any word to explore its meaning, pronunciation, transliteration, and related information. READ UNFAMILIAR SCRIPTS Read Arabic, Syriac, Phoenician, and Imperial Aramaic in Hebrew script, or select Latin as the Semitic transliteration target. Hebrew remains the default. The extension supports written vowel marks and script-specific signs where applicable, and can generate relevant word forms to improve dictionary and reference searches. LATIN TRANSLITERATION FOR MORE SCRIPTS - Hebrew and Arabic: ISO 259:1984 and ISO 233:1984, respectively, with additional Arabic-based letters used in Persian, Urdu, Pashto, Sindhi, Kurdish, and Uyghur. Syriac, Phoenician, and Imperial Aramaic also have Latin mappings. - Indic scripts: ISO 15919:2001 for Devanagari (including Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi, and Nepali), Bengali/Assamese, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Sinhala. - Armenian, Georgian, and Greek: ISO 9985:2026, ISO 9984:2026, and ISO 843:1997 (Type 1). - Thai: transcription based on ISO 11940-2:2007, using an offline pronunciation dictionary and approximate rules for unresolved words. - Ethiopic, including Ge’ez: Latin transliteration based on the ALA-LC (2011) Amharic and Tigrinya tables, with separate controls for approximate sixth-order vowel omission and pronunciation-oriented vowel spelling. Each supported Indic script, Armenian, Georgian, Greek, and Thai has its own Latin transliteration checkbox, enabled by default. Ethiopic-to-Latin is controlled separately and is off by default. Pronunciation-based readings are approximations and may depend on language and context. COMPARE ORIGINAL TEXT AND TRANSLITERATION Choose original text, transliteration, or both. Combined view follows the original language's word order while each word in Latin script reads left to right. You can still click individual words to explore their dictionary and reference results, and the Ayn Ayn context-menu preview follows your transliteration preferences. Ge’ez numerals are converted to decimal notation independently of letter transliteration. Traditional and digit-by-digit forms are supported, including numerals within words. Combined view shows the original numeral followed by its converted value, for example ፪፻፱ (209). EXPLORE MULTIPLE SOURCES IN ONE PLACE AynAyn provides tailored access to dictionaries, translation services, pronunciation databases, encyclopedias, etymological references, Wikimedia projects, and general web search. Where supported, results appear in separate tabs within the research window, preserving the original websites' appearance and functionality. Provider-specific adjustments help bring relevant content into view. USE WIKIPEDIA ACROSS LANGUAGES AynAyn can find an article in the source language and follow its interlanguage links to the corresponding article in an enabled target language. This makes it possible to explore the same subject in different languages without relying on machine translation. CONTINUE WHERE YOU LEFT OFF Lookup history lets you quickly return to previously researched words and passages. The Options pane groups transliteration settings into Semitic scripts and Other scripts, with individual script switches and vowel options, alongside extensive control over reference sources and lookup preferences. ABOUT THE PROJECT AynAyn Lookup is a modernized and enhanced continuation of the original Mozilla XUL Add-On, developed by its original author. The WebExtension port preserves the established research workflow while introducing updated providers, improved transliteration, and compatibility with modern browsers. Development assistance was provided by ChatGPT Codex. Transliteration runs locally in your browser and is available offline. Online lookup services require an internet connection. External reference websites remain responsible for their own content and availability.
