Overview

An equal-area world map: pick a country, cut it out, and place it anywhere in the world to compare its true size (area).

Equal Earth Map is an equal-area world map. Pick a country, place a copy of it anywhere in the world, and compare its true size (area). HOW TO OPEN THE MAP After installing, click the Equal Earth Map icon in the Chrome toolbar. The map opens in a new tab. If the icon is not in the toolbar, click the puzzle-piece icon (Extensions), then click the pin next to "Equal Earth Map". The icon will stay in the toolbar. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Choose a country in the "Country to overlay" box. Type to filter the list. You can search by the country's English name. • The chosen country is shown in orange in its real location, and its copy in translucent red. • Drag the red copy anywhere in the world, and turn it with the Rotation slider (0–360°). The Overlay button shows or hides the copy. • Drag the map to rotate the globe, or click a point to bring it to the center. • Zoom in up to 32× with the mouse wheel, a two-finger pinch, or the + / − buttons. The more you zoom in, the more place names appear. • Two rotation modes: "Lat & lon" turns the globe in any direction; "Lon only" turns it left and right only, keeping the equator horizontal. • The Place names button shows or hides country and city names. • Reset returns to the starting view, with Japan overlaid. • 22 display languages, chosen from the menu with the globe icon. The map first opens in your browser's language if it is one of them, otherwise in English. • The "?" button opens a help dialog. ABOUT EQUAL EARTH Equal Earth is an equal-area projection: areas on the map keep their true proportions. A copy moved somewhere else looks distorted, but its area does not change. Lay Japan over Europe, or move Russia down to the equator, and see how big they really are. PRIVACY • The extension requests no permissions, and it does not read or change the web pages you visit. • The map data and the drawing libraries (D3 and TopoJSON) are bundled in the extension. Opening and using the map does not connect to any external server. • There are no ads in the extension. • The only thing it stores is the display language you choose, in your browser's localStorage on your device. It is never sent anywhere. • At the bottom of the help dialog are links to the web version of the map and to the privacy policy. They open in a new tab only when you click them. The web version (equal-earth.sakinao.com) shows ads. Privacy policy: https://equal-earth.sakinao.com/privacy/en/
