Overview

Type with your voice on any website. Chrome recognizes your speech on this computer: free, no account, offline after setup.

Saypen lets you type with your voice in the text fields of the websites you use. Click into a field, press Alt+Shift+D and speak: Saypen types your words for you, with punctuation and capital letters. Dictate emails, chat messages and posts instead of typing them. Chrome's built-in speech recognition turns your voice into text right on your computer, so there is no round trip to a server. Saypen is free, with no account and no minute limits. HOW IT WORKS • Click into a text field on a website, then press Alt+Shift+D or click the Saypen button in the toolbar. • A small bar at the top of the page shows that Saypen is listening, in which language, and the words it hears as they are recognized. When the field is near the top of the page, the bar moves to the bottom. • Each finished phrase is typed into the field, with automatic punctuation and capital letters (you can turn this off). Spaces between phrases are added for you, in languages that use them. • Stop whenever you like: press Esc, click Stop, press the shortcut again or say "stop listening". Saypen also stops by itself after a silence (1 minute by default, adjustable), when you switch to another tab or window, or when the page navigates or closes. VOICE COMMANDS • "new line" starts a new line. In chat apps it adds a line break and does not send your message. • "new paragraph" starts a new paragraph. • "delete that" removes the last phrase Saypen typed. • "stop listening" turns voice typing off. Voice commands work in English and five other languages, and the setup page shows the words to say in yours. You can turn them off. WORKS WHERE YOU WRITE • Ordinary text boxes, and the rich editors that many mail, chat, AI-chat and social sites are built with. • If no text field is selected, your words stay in the bar with Copy and Close buttons, so nothing you said is lost. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Your voice is turned into text by Chrome on your computer. Saypen never records, saves or sends audio. • Saypen itself makes no network requests at all: no servers, no analytics, no ads, no remote code and no account. • The microphone is on only while voice typing is on. The Saypen icon shows a red ON badge, and your computer may also show that the microphone is in use. • No history and no transcripts. To place spaces and capital letters, Saypen reads only the few characters just before the cursor, and it stores nothing from the page. • Saypen never types into password fields. • Your settings stay on this computer and are never synced. • The one download: the first time you use a language, you click Download on the setup page and Chrome fetches that language's speech model from Google (about 200 MB, once per language). Chrome keeps it for later, and recognition then works offline. SET UP IN THREE STEPS The setup page opens once after you install Saypen. To reopen it later, right-click the Saypen icon and choose Options. 1. Allow the microphone. Chrome asks once, on Saypen's own page, not on every website. 2. Choose your language and download its speech model. 3. See your shortcut (and change it if you like), then try voice typing in the "Try it here" box. The same page has the settings: automatic punctuation, voice commands, the silence timeout, and start and stop sounds. PERMISSIONS IN PLAIN WORDS • activeTab: access to the current tab, only after you press the shortcut or click the toolbar button. Saypen can't see any site before that. • scripting: runs Saypen's own script in that tab to type your words, carry out voice commands and show the listening bar. • offscreen: a hidden Saypen page holds the microphone and Chrome's speech recognizer while voice typing is on, and closes when you stop. • storage: keeps your settings on this computer, and the current session in memory so that "delete that" works. Saypen shows no permission warning at install. Chrome asks for the microphone the first time, on the setup page. GOOD TO KNOW • You need Chrome 139 or newer on a desktop computer, a microphone, and a Chrome that can recognize speech on the device. The setup page tells you if yours can't. • Saypen works in the languages Chrome supports on your computer. The setup page lists them. • Chrome doesn't let extensions run on its own pages, on the Chrome Web Store or in its PDF viewer, so Saypen can't type there. The toolbar button tells you so when you try. • Recognition uses Chrome's on-device model: good for dictation, but not perfect. Names and specialist words can come out wrong. • Saypen listens to your microphone only. It is not a meeting transcriber and does not transcribe audio playing in a tab. • You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. • The interface is available in 16 languages.
