Overview

Lights up when the page you're on got 400+ points on Hacker News, and takes you to the thread. Your browsing stays on your machine.

I kept finishing articles and then going over to HN to see if anyone had talked about them. This does that check for me. When the page you're on got 400 or more points on Hacker News, the button in your toolbar turns orange and shows the score. Click it for the thread. If the same link was posted a few times, you get all of them, with points, comments and dates. A grey dot means this exact page wasn't on HN, but other posts from the same site were, and the popup lists those. On a page with nothing at all, it shows what did well on HN this week. You can also right-click a link and pick "Find this link on Hacker News", or type hn and a few words in the address bar to search about 26,000 top stories. There's one more thing, experimental and off by default: turn on "points next to links" in settings and every link to a top HN story gets a small ▲ 1.2k beside it, on any page. Chrome will ask you to let the extension "read and change all your data on all websites" for that, because it has to see the links. It only reads link addresses and checks them the same local way, and the badges ignore your own minimum and muted sites so pages can't learn your settings. Turn that off again and the extension gives the permission back. Privacy The easy way to build this is to send every URL you visit to a search API. I didn't want that. The extension downloads the list of HN stories with 400+ points once a day and checks pages against it in your browser. A URL only goes out if you click search or submit, and an address-bar search only goes to Algolia if nothing in the list matches and you press Enter. GitHub hosts the list, so it sees your IP when the list downloads, like any website would, but not the pages you read. Chrome's install prompt says the extension can "read your browsing history". That's the tabs permission: the button has to see each tab's address to check it against the list. Nothing is sent anywhere. If it lights up too often, raise the bar to 500, 750, 1,000 or 2,000 points. You can also turn off the grey dot and mute sites. Keys: Alt+Shift+H opens the popup, where j and k move and / searches. Alt+Shift+Y goes straight to the top thread. The list is rebuilt every six hours from the Algolia HN API. The code that builds the list is on GitHub (the extension's own code isn't public, but the package isn't minified, so you can read exactly what runs): https://github.com/Show-Hacker-News-Points/show-hacker-news-points.github.io Not affiliated with Hacker News or Y Combinator.
