TabNest
Overview
Local-first tab organiser: project grouping, safe tab sleep, sessions and search.
TabNest keeps a browser full of tabs under control without sending anything anywhere. It sorts your tabs into native tab groups by the project you are working on, puts idle tabs to sleep to free memory, saves your windows so you never lose them, and finds any tab in a keystroke. GROUP TABS BY PROJECT, NOT TOPIC • One click on Organize looks at how you opened your tabs (which page opened which, what you opened together, and site and path) and proposes groups such as "Q3 launch" or "Lisbon trip". • You see a preview first: rename groups or move tabs, then apply. Every change can be undone for 30 seconds. • Add your own rules (for example, a site always goes into a named group). TabNest also learns when you move a tab yourself. SLEEP IDLE TABS SAFELY • Tabs you haven't used for a while go to sleep and reload when you click them. Choose Gentle (60 min), Balanced (30 min), Aggressive (10 min) or your own time, per site or per group. • Never put to sleep: the tab you are looking at, tabs playing sound, video calls, tabs that are loading or opened in the last minute, and pinned tabs if you choose. An optional form guard also protects tabs with unsaved form input. • Sleeps sooner when your device is low on memory, and shows an estimate of the memory saved. SAVE AND RESTORE SESSIONS • Save all windows or one window as a named session, with tab groups, colours, pins and order. • Automatic snapshots every 10 minutes and when windows close. If the browser crashes, TabNest offers to bring everything back. • Restore into new windows, into the current window, or with every tab asleep, so even 150 tabs come back without freezing the browser. SEARCH EVERYTHING • Press Alt+Shift+K to search open, sleeping and saved tabs from one box, with typo-tolerant matching. Enter switches to the tab or reopens it. • Filters: g:group, s: saved only, w:2 for a window, asleep. Commands like "sleep group" and "save session" work from the same box. CLEAN UP • Close duplicate tabs (keeping the copy you used last), tabs that failed to load, and tabs you haven't opened in a week, which are archived into a session first. Undo is always one click away. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No account, no server, no analytics, no network requests. Everything is stored in your browser profile on your device. • InPrivate windows are never touched or stored. GOOD TO KNOW • Saved sessions are stored only in this browser profile. Uninstalling TabNest deletes them, and there is no export or sync yet (export is planned). • When you restore with every tab asleep, the first tab of each window is a TabNest placeholder page that loads the real site when you open it. If TabNest is removed or updated before you open such a tab, the browser closes it. • Restoring very large sessions is slower in Edge than in Chrome (roughly 35–40 seconds for 150 tabs). The browser stays usable and the popup shows progress. • Undo after closing tabs reopens them in the same place, but their back/forward history is not kept. • Error-page cleanup finds most pages that failed to load, but may miss a site's home page. • Memory savings are estimates. • Group names are suggestions; rename them in the preview before applying. • After a normal shutdown, TabNest may occasionally offer to restore your last snapshot. Just dismiss it. • Not available in InPrivate windows. If Alt+Shift+K is taken, set your own shortcut at edge://extensions/shortcuts. Free. Works in Google Chrome.
