Headlinify
Overview
Right-click (or hover while pressing Option+Shift+Z) a headline link to overlay a neutral, factual headline.
Headlinify rewrites a clickbait headline into a plain, factual one — in place, on the page you are already reading. To use this, right-click any link and choose Headlinify. The extension fetches that article, rewrites the headline into something that states the actual news, and overlays the result on the link. Press Alt+Shift+Z to do the same to whichever link is under your cursor. Click the Headlinify icon on the overlay to open a reader view: a short factual summary of the article. TWO WAYS TO SUMMARIZE On-device (default). Chrome's built-in Gemini Nano model does the rewriting locally. No article text is sent to any AI service, and there is no API key or account to set up. Claude API (optional). If you would rather use Anthropic's Claude Haiku, add your own API key in settings. You can run Claude on its own, or keep Nano as the default and let Claude cover the moments when Nano is unavailable or still loading. In general, Claude will produce faster summaries than the on-device LLM. There's an initial startup for the Nano LLM which can run 30-60 seconds depending on your hardware. Subsequent Nano summaries take 2-4 seconds depending on article text. Comparatively, Claude usually takes a 200-300ms. PRIVACY In on-device mode, article text never leaves your machine. The extension does fetch the article page itself, exactly as your browser would if you had clicked the link. In Claude mode, the article text and your API key are sent to api.anthropic.com to generate the summary. Your key is stored only in this browser profile and is sent nowhere else. Headlinify has no analytics, no tracking, and no server of its own. REQUIREMENTS On-device summarizing needs desktop Chrome 138 or newer, roughly 22 GB of free disk space, and either a GPU with more than 4 GB of VRAM or a CPU with 16 GB of RAM and four or more cores. Chrome downloads the model once, started from a button in Headlinify's settings. If your machine cannot run it, add an Anthropic API key and use Claude instead.
