A chat with an unknown number is not touched until you choose "Sync this chat" — and group chats are never synced. Your personal conversations stay personal. It does not back-fill your history. The first time a chat syncs, what is already on screen is left alone. After that it resumes exactly where it stopped, so nothing is lost if your browser was closed, and nothing is ever saved twice.
