Chrome Extension Downloader & Source Code Viewer – CRX Extractor
Overview
Download a Chrome extension as a CRX or ZIP file, or view its source code before you install it. Search every file.
Chrome Extension Downloader & Source Code Viewer saves extensions from the Chrome Web Store as ZIP or CRX files and shows you their full source code before you install them. Open a store page, click once, and every file of the extension opens in a clean, searchable viewer. ✨ WHAT IT DOES 📦 Download extensions as a ZIP file or as the original CRX package 🔍 Search inside every file at once: plain text, match case or regular expressions 🗂️ Browse all files in a folder tree with file sizes, starting with manifest.json 🎨 Read code with syntax highlighting for JavaScript, JSON, HTML and CSS ✨ Pretty print minified code to make it readable 🏷️ See the name, version, manifest version and extension ID at a glance 🖼️ Preview images and icons inside the package 📄 Copy any file or download it on its own 🧭 Filter files by name or by type: code, markup, images, locales 📂 Open a package you already downloaded by dragging it onto the viewer 🔗 Paste a store link or an extension ID to open a listing 🚀 HOW TO USE 1. Open an extension's page on the Chrome Web Store. 2. Click the Extension Downloader button in the toolbar. 3. Choose "View source" to read the code, or "Download ZIP" to save it. Tip: right-click any link to a store listing and choose "View extension source". 🎯 WHO IT'S FOR 👩💻 Developers who want to learn how other extensions are built 🛡️ Careful users who want to check the code and permissions before installing 🔎 Reviewers and researchers who need to inspect the exact code in a package 🧩 Extension authors who want a quick look at a competitor's manifest and permissions 💡 WHY THIS ONE ⚡ One click from the store page: no copying links into a website 👀 More than a chrome extension downloader: search, highlighting and pretty print are built in 🔐 The extension you inspect is never installed or run 🔒 PRIVACY This extension does not collect, store or send any personal data. It has no ads and no analytics. To show an extension, it downloads that package directly from Google's servers, the same way Chrome does when you install something. Files you open from your computer are read on your device and are never uploaded. ❓ FAQ Do I need to install the extension I want to inspect? No. The package is downloaded and shown as files. It is never installed or run. What is the difference between ZIP and CRX? CRX is the signed package format the Chrome Web Store uses. ZIP is the same files in a format any computer can open. Can I open a file I already downloaded? Yes. Open the viewer from the settings page, then choose the file or drop it onto the page. Why can't I open some extensions? The store does not provide packages for some items, for example unpublished, paid or region-restricted ones. The viewer tells you when this happens. Does it work with Firefox or Edge add-ons? Not yet. This version supports the Chrome Web Store and package files on your computer. 💬 If it saves you time, a short review on the Chrome Web Store helps other people find it. Free to use. No account needed.
