Type Korean without an IME. Romanization or 두벌식, straight to your clipboard.

Hangil Korean Pad is a small floating keyboard for writing Korean on a computer with no Korean IME installed. Click the toolbar icon and a compact window opens, detached from the browser. Type — in romanization or on the standard 두벌식 layout — watch the syllables assemble themselves as you go, then press Ctrl+Enter and it is on your clipboard. Nothing to install at the OS level, nothing to configure. annyeonghaseyo → 안녕하세요 (romanization) dkssud → 안녕 (두벌식, on the keys a Korean keyboard prints) Ordinary Korean is written in Hangul alone, so this is a complete input method rather than a useful fragment. WHAT IT DOES • Two ways to type, and the switch is in the header. Romanization for people who do not know where the jamo live, 두벌식 for people who do. Ctrl+Shift+K, or one click, moves between them. • Syllables that build themselves. Blocks assemble the way an IME assembles them — a finished syllable gives its final consonant up to open the next one the moment a vowel arrives, and half a compound final leaves while the other half stays. hangug is 한국, and one more letter makes it 한구기; anj is 앉, and one more makes it 안자. • A 한글 / 영문 switch. Ctrl+K passes every keystroke through untouched, for URLs, English words, passwords, and ㅋㅋ next to Latin. Mixed Korean and English is routine in real Korean writing, and on 두벌식 an escape from the jamo is not a nicety but a necessity. The accent colour changes with the mode, so you can see which one you are in. • Ruled lines, or 원고지 squares. Both accept both scripts, so the choice is purely cosmetic and nothing about your text changes when you switch. The square is measured against the font on your own machine rather than assumed — Hangul does not advance a full em in the fonts people actually have — so Korean lines up with the grid wherever you are. • A typing guide in a window of its own. Every letter, the tense consonants, the vowels and worked examples, at a size you can read across a desk, in a second window that sits beside the pad and follows whatever the pad is set to. Both charts are drawn from the engine's own tables, so a spelling the guide teaches is by construction one the pad accepts. • A window that stays open. A normal toolbar popup closes the moment it loses focus, which is the wrong behaviour here — the whole point is to type Korean and then click into another window to paste. This is a real free-floating window. It stays put, and it remembers its size and position. • Your choice of Korean font and text size. Five families — Gothic 고딕, Myeongjo 명조, Dotum 돋움, Gungsuh 궁서 and Monospace 고정폭 — and 18 to 56 px. Text is set large by default, because the people who need this tool are often still learning to read it. • Your text stays put. Close the window, open it again, your text is still there. Settings follow your browser profile, so the same preferences show up on your other machines. THE ROMANIZATION One spelling per letter, the same in every position. g is ㄱ everywhere and k is ㅋ everywhere, which is what makes this reversible where Revised Romanization is not — RR writes 한국 as hanguk, spelling the same ㄱ two different ways depending on where it lands. ㄱ g ㄴ n ㄷ d ㄹ r or l ㅁ m ㅂ b ㅅ s ㅈ j ㅊ ch ㅋ k ㅌ t ㅍ p ㅎ h ㅇ ng ㄲ gg ㄸ dd ㅃ bb ㅆ ss ㅉ jj ㅏ a ㅐ ae ㅑ ya ㅒ yae ㅓ eo ㅔ e ㅕ yeo ㅖ ye ㅗ o ㅘ wa ㅙ wae ㅚ oe ㅛ yo ㅜ u ㅝ wo ㅞ we ㅟ wi ㅠ yu ㅡ eu ㅢ ui ㅣ i ㅇ is never typed at the start of a syllable — a vowel with nothing in front of it is given one, so an is 안. At the end it is spelled ng. A hyphen ends the syllable, exactly as RR's own specification prescribes for 중앙 jung-ang against 준강 jun-gang. You need it whenever a syllable ending in a consonant is followed by one starting on a vowel, because those really are the same letters in the same order: hangug-in → 한국인 hangugin → 한구긴 ddeogbogg-i → 떡볶이 Tense consonants double their own letter: ㄲ is gg, not kk. That is deliberate, and it leaves kk free to mean ㅋㅋ. 두벌식 needs none of this. One key, one letter, no hyphens and no ambiguity — and keys are read by position, so the layout is unchanged on an AZERTY or Dvorak keyboard. INTERFACE LANGUAGES English, 한국어, 日本語, 简体中文, 繁體中文 and ไทย. The pad follows your browser's language by default, and a setting overrules it — because plenty of learners run an English browser while wanting a Korean interface, or the reverse. Romanization is the default input method, unless your browser is already in Korean, in which case 두벌식 is. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No hanja conversion, no dictionary, no candidate list, and no 세벌식. None of those is a gap in ordinary Korean writing, and leaving them out keeps the window to one text box and the permissions to almost nothing. PRIVACY Two permissions, and that is the whole list: storage, to remember your text and settings, and clipboardWrite, to copy. The extension has no access to any web page, no host permissions, and makes no network requests at all. There is no third-party code in the package. The fonts come from your own computer rather than being loaded from the web. Nothing you type leaves your machine. FREE Free, and it stays that way.
