Overview

Math lesson for 6th grade on long division. Video instruction, worked examples, guided practice, and instructor notes.

To download all of Grade 6 for Windows or Mac, see https://guzintamath.com/downloads/guzintamath6.html. Visit https://goguzinta.com for the online version of all lesson apps. For one-on-one or whole-class mathematics instruction, use this Guzinta Math lesson as a supplement for teaching division of multi-digit whole numbers using the "standard" algorithm and drawing polygons and determining distances on the coordinate plane--all key concepts in 6th grade. NEW 5.0 version contains a slicker look, an exploratory module on division using the globally popular Exploding Dots model, and extra practice questions which appear progressively over 3 weeks from starting the app. The lesson app includes the popular Practice Meter feature, which can keep track of each student's practice level for this app across sessions. The purpose of the Practice Meter is to motivate students to come back and revisit this content and complete modules at regular intervals. Revisit the lesson app to keep your Practice Meter out of the red (or in the blue). It becomes easier over time to maintain your practice level above the key levels of 80 or 25, because the meter depletes much more slowly after a week, then a month, then 3 months, has passed. This math lesson app also includes a NOTES feature: helpful tips for students, self-explanation questions, further information, and even suggestions for extension or family involvement--for every question and example! Guzinta Math: Long Division focuses on the conceptual foundation for long division as well as the procedural fluency of the long division algorithm. Students also plot distances on the coordinate plane and use reasoning to plot the vertices of parallelograms and triangles on the coordinate plane. The final module includes an interactive coordinate grapher which is put to work to allow students to explore symmetry on the coordinate plane, including reflecting points across the x-axis, y-axis, and both axes. For one-on-one or whole-class mathematics instruction, use this Guzinta Math lesson as a supplement for teaching division of multi-digit whole numbers using the "standard" algorithm and drawing polygons and determining distances on the coordinate plane--all key concepts in 6th grade. The app includes detailed instructor notes for each guided practice problem, with notes about extending discussion around each worked example and problem. Instructors and/or students can turn on and use the new canvas feature in the app to write all over the screen--take notes, highlight key terms and ideas, show work, etc. This lesson features a guided video demonstration of long division, including modeling and step-by-step procedures. The video employs pause points to allow students to complete the opening long division example along with the narration. The third module includes an interactive coordinate graphing tool which gives students the opportunity to see how reflections across the axes work in "real time," as they enter the coordinates.

2.0 update has a fix to an answer in Module 1: 5006 divided by 20 is 250 with a remainder of 6 (not 205 with a remainder of 6!). Fixed!
