Overview

Shows roughly how many steps each Google Maps walking route takes and, with your height and weight, the calories burned.

See how many steps a walk will take before you set off. gStep adds a small label under each walking route in Google Maps directions, showing roughly how many steps the route takes. Add your height and weight and it shows the calories you'll burn too. • Works on the list of route options and on a route's details view • Steps are based on your height; calories on your weight and Google's walking time • Height in cm or feet and inches; weight in kg, pounds, or stones and pounds • The toolbar popup lists the routes on the page and has a quick calculator for any distance • Very long routes fit neatly, with calories moving under the steps • A short animation plays when a label first appears, and is switched off if your computer is set to reduce motion HOW THE ESTIMATES WORK Steps are the route distance divided by your step length, which is about 41% of your height. Calories use the American College of Sports Medicine walking equation for level ground, with Google's walking time for the route. Both are a rough guide: hills, pace and fitness all change the real numbers. The calories are the total you burn during the walk, so fitness trackers that show "active" calories will read about 30% lower. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your height and weight are stored only in your browser. gStep has no server, no account, no analytics and no ads. It runs only on Google Maps pages, where it reads each route's distance and time to work out its estimates. gStep is free. If you find it useful, you can buy me a coffee at ko-fi.com/gstep. Google Maps is a trademark of Google LLC. gStep is an independent extension and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google.
