Overview
Operate a city power grid through changing demand, renewable output, storage, incidents, and cascading failures.
Grid Command is a compact power-grid operations simulation built around balancing a fictional city network in real time. Every service day changes the operating problem. Electricity demand rises and falls by district and time of day. Weather changes renewable output and fault probability. Conventional generation has dispatch limits and ramp rates. Battery storage can cover shortfalls, but using it too aggressively can leave the system exposed later in the shift. Transmission lines have finite capacity and can trip when sustained overloads become too severe. The city is represented as a live network rather than a collection of isolated meters. Power is distributed through substations and transmission corridors, so a failure in one part of the grid can redirect flow elsewhere. A poorly timed outage can overload neighboring lines, split the network into electrical islands, depress frequency, and force emergency load shedding. Recovering service can require generation changes, battery support, line repairs, careful reconnection, and prioritization of critical districts. Core systems include: • Real-time city demand with district and time-of-day profiles. • Gas, hydro, wind, and solar generation with different operating behavior. • Grid-scale battery storage with charge and discharge control. • A connected transmission network with line loading, thermal stress, overload trips, and islanding. • Frequency response, reserve margin, emergency shedding, and service reliability. • Weather states that influence demand, renewable availability, and equipment risk. • Equipment incidents and a repair-crew dispatch workflow. • Critical and non-critical service areas with different consequences for lost load. • Operating cost, emissions, reliability, score, and end-of-day performance grading. • Persistent progression, upgrades, reinforcement decisions, and multi-day play. Grid Command is a game and uses a simplified fictional electrical model for gameplay. It does not connect to utility infrastructure, read live grid data, control real equipment, or provide professional engineering guidance.
