GPX File Viewer 3.1 — Bug Fixes and New Features GPX File Viewer is the fastest, most private way to look at a GPS track. Open a GPX, KML, or GeoJSON file and see your route on an interactive map in seconds — with no upload, no account, and no track data ever leaving your computer. Version 3.1 is a top-to-bottom overhaul that turns a bare map widget into a genuinely useful, polished GPS-track viewer. Here is everything that changed. NEW FEATURES Track statistics. Every track you open now gets an instant statistics panel: total distance, number of points, moving time and total duration, average and maximum speed, and elevation gain, loss, minimum and maximum. If your file carries timestamps and elevation — as most GPX exports from watches and phones do — the numbers appear automatically. Interactive elevation profile. A clean elevation chart sits below the map. Move your cursor across it and a marker glides to the exact spot on your route, so you can see precisely where the climbs and descents are. Multiple base maps. Switch between a standard street map, a topographic map with contour lines, and satellite imagery. Your choice is remembered for next time — ideal for hikers and cyclists who want real terrain context. Multi-track sidebar. Load several files at once and manage them from a tidy sidebar. Each track gets its own colour, and you can show or hide it, zoom to it, remove it, or clear everything with a single click. Tracks and waypoints are finally distinguishable at a glance. Waypoint and track pop-ups. Click any waypoint or line to read its name, description, and time straight from the original file. Export and convert. Open a file in one format and download it in another. Export any loaded track as GPX, KML, or GeoJSON — turning the viewer into a quick, handy format converter. Recent files. Your last opened tracks are saved locally on your device so you can reopen them in one click, without hunting through folders again. Large-file support. The old 1 MB limit is gone, replaced by a generous 50 MB ceiling. Big multi-hour rides recorded at one-second intervals now open smoothly: parsing runs in a background worker, dense tracks are automatically simplified for display, and the map draws on a fast canvas so the interface never freezes — even on tracks with a hundred thousand points. Measure tool and printing. Click along the map to measure distances on the fly for quick route planning, and print a clean, full-page map view when you want a paper copy or a PDF. Drag-and-drop onboarding. A friendly empty state invites you to drop a file or click Open, and the drop zone highlights as you drag a file over it — so the feature is finally discoverable instead of hidden. Responsive layout and dark mode. The map now fills the whole window at any size, from a narrow laptop to a large monitor, and a light/dark theme toggle is remembered between sessions. Localised interface. The viewer's on-screen text now follows your browser language across more than forty languages, reusing the translations the extension already shipped. Offline awareness. If you lose your connection, a clear banner tells you that map tiles may not load — no more silent, blank map leaving you wondering what went wrong. FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS Silent failures are over. Previously, an oversized, corrupt, or unsupported file did nothing at all — the map just sat there. Now every file you open ends in either a rendered track or a clear, specific error message, with a spinner while parsing and a confirmation when a track loads successfully. An honest, store-compliant listing. The extension no longer advertises a Google Drive integration that did not actually exist, resolving a Chrome Web Store policy risk. The store listing and on-page text were rewritten across every supported language to describe exactly what the app does. A package that actually ships. Reserved internal metadata and an invalid update field that blocked Web Store upload were removed, so the extension can now be published cleanly. Correct map attribution. OpenStreetMap is now credited properly with a working link, in line with its usage policy. Waypoint styling fixed. A long-standing bug caused custom waypoint styling to be ignored; markers now render exactly as intended. Lighter, cleaner, faster. We deleted a large amount of dead code and unused stylesheets, dropped a heavy CSS framework that was being loaded for a single button, and upgraded the underlying mapping engine from a 2017 release to the current version — bringing years of fixes and performance improvements with a much smaller footprint. A hard-coded development URL and debug logging were stripped out, malformed HTML was corrected, and a latent crash that could silently disable the toolbar button was eliminated. Privacy, unchanged and uncompromising. As always, your files are parsed entirely inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored on a server, and no account is ever required. GPX File Viewer simply opens your tracks — faster, clearer, and more capable than ever before.
