Overview
All the Gmail™. None of the noise. Faster, more responsive Gmail™ without changing anything you see. Not affiliated with Google.
Gmail gets slower the longer you use it. Goat for Gmail fixes that without removing a single feature, changing the layout, or asking you to learn anything new. You get the same Gmail you already know. It just stops feeling like it's running through molasses. WHAT IT DOES Gmail does a lot of background work you never see. It pings tracking endpoints dozens of times per minute. It loads the Gemini sidebar bundle whether you use it or not. It paints frosted-glass effects on every row hover. It re-renders the entire thread when you open a long conversation. After a few hours, all of that adds up, and the tab gets sluggish. Goat for Gmail turns those off, defers them, or rate-limits them, surgically. The features you actually use — the inbox, search, compose, keyboard shortcuts, labels, attachments — work exactly the same. They just respond faster. FASTER BACKGROUND Rate-limits the chatty Google telemetry endpoints Gmail uses for product analytics, so your network and CPU are free to do the work you care about. Holds Chat, Meet, Cloud Search, Contacts, and Notification requests until your inbox is on screen — Gmail fires all five before a single message appears, eating into the processing power your mail needs first. Once your inbox renders, they go through automatically. Defers the Gemini sidebar bundle until you actually click the Gemini button. Optionally refreshes Gmail every four hours in the background to clear accumulated memory bloat, and only when no compose window is open so you never lose a draft. Adds pre-connect hints for Gmail's CDN hosts at page start, cutting DNS and TLS setup time before Gmail's own scripts run. Suppresses Gmail's boot-phase animations and transitions for the first few seconds of load — there are hundreds of them, and each one costs a paint frame on the main thread. FASTER SCROLLING AND CLICKS Strips the expensive backdrop-filter, complex box-shadow rules, and slow transitions from the inbox surface. Moves inbox scrolling to a GPU compositor layer so scroll frames stay smooth even when Gmail's JavaScript is busy. Eliminates the touch disambiguation delay so scrolling on a touchpad or phone responds immediately, without the browser waiting to rule out a pinch gesture. Applies CSS containment to message list rows so the browser can skip layout work for off-screen rows. Lazy-loads contact avatars at low priority and reserves their space upfront, so avatar fetches don't compete with your inbox data and the list doesn't shift as photos load. Defers rendering of off-screen messages inside long threads, so a 50-message conversation opens without freezing the tab. FASTER COMPOSE Force-saves your drafts on tab close. Sanitizes paste formatting so you never end up with a giant chunk of styled text from a random web page in the middle of your reply. Stops the compose window's scroll from leaking into the inbox behind it. Debounces Smart Compose suggestions during fast typing so the gray predictive text does not flicker. QUALITY-OF-LIFE UPGRADES Prefetches the thread under your cursor after a brief hover, so the click feels instant. Restores keyboard focus to the next row after you archive or delete with e or #, instead of dumping you at the top of the list. Replaces Gmail's small corner "Undo Send" toast with a centered, hard-to-miss confirmation dialog you can't accidentally let expire. Auto-retries broken inline images. Remembers your scroll position inside long threads and search results. Warms up the label and "Move to" pickers on mouse enter so the dropdown opens without a loading delay when you click. YOU STAY IN CONTROL Every feature is toggleable from the popup. If one of them disagrees with your workflow, turn it off and the rest keep working. PRIVACY Goat for Gmail does not collect, transmit, or share any data. All processing is local. Your feature-toggle settings sync through your own Google account via chrome.storage.sync. Scroll positions in long threads and search results are stored in sessionStorage in your browser and cleared when you close the tab. We do not run a server. We do not have analytics. We do not have a third party. To deliver its performance improvements, the extension intercepts certain outbound requests made by the Gmail tab: Google analytics and telemetry endpoints are rate-limited (the first request per 15-minute window passes through; subsequent ones are suppressed), startup requests to Chat, Meet, Cloud Search, Contacts, and Notifications are held until the inbox renders, and the Gemini sidebar bundle is deferred until you engage the Gemini panel. All interception happens entirely within your browser. None of the intercepted data is read, logged, or transmitted by the extension. WHAT CHANGES VISUALLY Nothing. That is the point. Goat for Gmail is invisible — every menu, button, label, and shortcut is exactly where Gmail put it. The only new UI is the centered Undo Send dialog (optional) and the popup with your feature toggles. If you've been thinking about giving up on Gmail because the tab keeps getting slower, try Goat for Gmail first.
